After another successful HealthyFood Match campaign, we are excited to end the year by donating the proceeds to the Preventive Food Pantry at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and About Fresh, two nonprofits that provide nutrition-based services to community members and patients. Each organization will receive $50,000. They both share the impact this donation will have on their operations.

As part of our Season of Giving, volunteers recently dropped off donations from our colleagues to The Dimock Center in Boston, one of our Community Investment partners. Team members brought canned goods, non-perishable foods and new winter clothing. The Dimock Center serves thousands of people each year, providing convenient access to high-quality, low-cost healthcare and human services to community members.

We are continuing our Season of Giving this holiday season by giving back to the communities where we live and work. A number of our Boston colleagues recently came together to provide some joy to patients at Boston Medical Center (BMC) by decorating pediatric spaces at the hospital. Boston Medical Center (BMC) is one of our Community Investment partners and provides not only traditional medical care, but also essential services, like the StreetCred program. StreetCred offers free in-clinic tax preparation services to help BMC patient families gain access to income and child tax credits, trauma-informed financial coaching classes and more. When families can access upstream financial levers for basic economic and nutritional security, lasting wellness is possible.

Last month, we announced an exciting initiative to support special operations veterans. For every four customers who register for Vitality, John Hancock will donate a Galleri multi-cancer early detection test to Home Base. Special operations veterans are at an increased risk of cancer, and we know how important early cancer detection is when it comes to improved long-term outcomes. Our collaboration with Home Base to support special operations veterans is part of our mission to help more people live longer, healthier, better lives. This month, we are shining a spotlight on colleagues who are giving back to their communities in a meaningful way. Susan is a long-time resident of the Greater Boston area and wanted to find a way to make a difference in the city she calls home. In 2017, she launched a Boston chapter of the charity 100 Women Who Care. Four times a year, 100 women gather, each donating $100, to raise $10,000 for a local charity. To date, 100 Women Who Care Boston has donated $175,000 to 23 different charities.

Is the aging process something we can change? We caught up with Andrew Steele at our Longer. Healthier. Better. symposium in Boston to take a closer look at some of the new research around getting older and learn how the Galápagos giant tortoise could offer some clues.

Today, I shared my decision to retire at the end of May next year and welcomed my successor, Pragashini Fox. I have truly cherished my time working with and getting to know all my colleagues at Manulife. Everyone on our team cares deeply about the work we do, brings a can-do mindset, and is always ready to collaborate to make an impact. Those incredible strengths have enabled our team to help create a culture at Manulife that has played an essential role in the company’s transformation and success. I am tremendously proud of this accomplishment and what it has meant, not just for our shareholders and other external stakeholders but most especially for our global teammates. Together, we have helped our colleagues navigate through a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic while at the same time, building a completely new foundation and HRC organization. Over the past six+ years, we’ve created and launched a range of programs in response to colleague feedback that has brought our values to life, made our workplace more inclusive, helped colleagues grow their skills and careers, and elevated their connection to our company’s purpose. Every aspect of the work we do has been transformed as well — from the tools and processes we use, to the compensation and benefits programs we offer, to the way we connect, celebrate, and powerfully communicate, attract and onboard talent, support managers, remain compliant, and so much more. I will be forever grateful for our team’s commitment to make “better” a reality. There are so many exciting things ahead as we continue to raise the bar for ourselves and our industry, which is why I am very pleased to welcome Pragashini to lead our team when I retire next year. Pragashini brings infectious optimism and passion for the work we do, as well as a keen appreciation of how to help our global workforce be more change-ready and resilient. I have felt so privileged to have the chance to make a positive difference in other’s lives during my time at Manulife. The responsibility and the true joy of being able to make decisions that can help colleagues unlock their dreams, provide a better life for themselves and their loved ones, as well as better support to our customers, has been tremendously fulfilling. I have every confidence that under Pragashini’s leadership, our amazing team will continue to propel Manulife’s success. And I look forward to watching my colleagues grow their careers and make their mark. Thank you to everyone across Manulife for everything!

Today, we recognize International Day of Persons with Disabilities as we continue to work to foster an environment where everyone feels accepted, valued, and included. Our Ability Employee Resource Group (ERG) is a community where colleagues come together to share their humanity by creating a safe, welcoming, and supportive space for people of all abilities. Louise is a member of the Ability ERG and shares the importance of this day.

We are wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful holiday with family, friends and loved ones. Our colleagues recently got into the holiday spirit by coming together to give back to the community. We held an in-office volunteer event in support of Boston Medical Center (BMC), where colleagues created care packages to provide parents and newborns with essential supplies, easing the transition for families facing financial challenges.
