About us
The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington envisions an open, connected, and vibrant Jewish community that cares for each other, fosters Jewish learning and journeys, embraces Jewish peoplehood and Israel, and acts as a force for good in the world. Our mission is to inspire, build, and sustain vibrant Jewish life in a changing world by mobilizing our community in common purpose, intentional innovation, and effective action. Federation supports 58 local agencies, 14 national organizations, 18 overseas partners and programs, and 60+ congregations that care for those in need, deepen engagement in Jewish life and connect Jews locally, in Israel, and around the world. Justice for the poor, honoring seniors, supporting those who are ill or in crisis, nurturing and educating our children, inclusion of all, and helping refugees find freedom and economic self-sufficiency are central to our values and the programs we support. We are equally committed to inspiring learning and experiences in order to shape our Jewish communal identity. Formal education opportunities and informal Jewish experiences like summer camps, youth groups and trips to Israel provide learning, recreational, cultural and social activities that nourish our bodies and our minds. We connect with purpose through our culture, history, and identity.

We are heartbroken by the sudden, unexpected passing of Rabbi Matthew Bellas, z"l, Lower School Principal of Charles E Smith Jewish Day School. In his message to the CESJDS community, Head of School Rabbi Mitchel Malkus reflected on Rabbi Bellas' lasting impact during his 11 years there. "His leadership was marked by humor, warmth, and a deep commitment to the well-being of every child. Rabbi Bellas led with compassion and pride, always striving to create an environment where each student felt valued, cared for, and inspired. His legacy of kindness, dedication, and love for our community will remain in our hearts forever." Our community is a more vibrant and special place thanks to Rabbi Bellas and his many contributions. May his family and the CESJDS community be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem and may the memory of Rabbi Matthew Bellas be for a blessing.
