Self–Improvement never ends. Whether personal or professional, that’s how I’m living my life now. In the insurance industry, the landscape is constantly in flux. You have to be aware how the ground is shifting under you as an insurance agent or fall behind. That’s why I've made a commitment to continued education. How can I expect my staff to stay on top of things if I don’t? Not only is it necessary to lead by example, but it’s also necessary in order to give my clients the most up to date and efficient service. Stagnation is simply not an option. The best option is to forever remain a student. I’m grateful to be attending my first CRM (Certified Risk Management) class from The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research to further my risk management education. It makes me a better agent and leader. In our fast-paced digital world, I still believe in the power of handwritten cards. It’s my little way of showing referral partners and clients how much I value them. A quick email can never match the personal touch of a handwritten card. It shows I took the time, thought about them, and genuinely appreciate our connection. Plus, it's a nice break from the screen for both of us! I know when I get a handwritten card, it makes me stop and appreciate it for that moment. So, I continue to send these out. It’s Employee Appreciation Day, but is appreciation enough? Let me explain. I think appreciating your staff is crucial to any business, but as I’ve become a leader, I've learned that your employees need more than your appreciation. I believe it is my responsibility to create a safe space for them. I want to encourage the staff at Jackson & Jackson to be creative. That requires flexibility and openness. By creating an environment in which employees can express their ideas and be rewarded for creative solutions, I strengthen our business and encourage their growth. When they grow, we all grow. Today and every day, I appreciate our employees. But I also create space for them. I encourage them to challenge themselves. I cater my leadership style to them. What better way to show appreciation? Vulnerability is my strength. I fully understand the contrast there. But it’s something I’ve learned while on social media. I decided to be open and share my journey as an insurance agent. Since then, I’ve realized that openness is one of my biggest advantages, it allows me to connect with people authentically. That connection then allows me to have meaningful conversations that make me a better agent and leader. Using platforms as more than just a selling tool has been a blessing for me. It’s allowed me to connect with people who are where I am and who have been there as well. It also allows me to attract the type of people I want to do business with. Opening a window into my life has already opened multiple doors for me. As a musician, I knew tapping into my emotions would be to my advantage. I never thought i could apply that to insurance, yet here I am. I’ll continue sharing my journey. I know now it’s going to lead to more connections made and lessons learned. There’s the moment and then it’s gone. We so often get caught up in our days, that we forget, that all they are is a collection of moments. That’s why I appreciate each moment. Not only that, but I do my best to live in the present moment. The past may inform our present, but we can’t change it. Likewise, you can plan, but you can’t control the future. That’s why I learned to live from moment to moment. I can understand why taking risks is scary. The uncertainty of it can be overwhelming. That’s why not only did I learn to live in the moment, I learned to love it. When you stay in the present moment you learn to let go of the past and not stress the future. It’s much easier to type than do, but I promise you it’s worthwhile. It’s through staying in the moment that I'm able to take risks, better assess situations and overall be a better agent for my clients and a better leader for my staff. I invite you to pause and just soak in the current moment. No matter where your mind wanders, come back here. Because here is where everything happens. What does it take to shift a culture? I’ll let you know. Over 2 months ago I became president of Jackson & Jackson Insurance. I did so proudly, aware of the lineage of the agency, but also with the intent of modernizing it. I’ve inherited 90 years of history. There is value in that, but I also cannot let it intimidate me. I can keep tradition alive while at the same time building a culture that makes sense for 2024. Before, each agent at the agency was an island on to themselves. Now I've made it my mission to connect our agents with each other, creating a support system. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. We can leverage each other’s knowledge and experience to create a network that benefits both us and our clients. I know fostering a company is no easy task. Culture is an intangible, by its very nature hard to quantify. But with each new hiring, conversation and connection I know a new piece of my culture is being shaped.
