🛰️Five continents connected via satellite? Radical! In December 1985, for the first time, five continents were linked to provide video coverage of the "Beyond War" award ceremony from San Francisco. Six Intelsat satellites were used to help make this possible. The broadcast garnered global news media attention and major companies took notice about a new technology called “video conferencing.” “The Beyond War video teleconference Sunday is just one use of a technology that is rapidly gaining popularity among businesses and private groups who see it as an effective and economical way to hold meetings even though participants are scattered around the world. Industry analysts say the use of video teleconferencing has more than doubled each year … and many multinational companies now regard it as a standard communications tool.” – New York Times, December 10, 1986 📺 Watch the full broadcast >>> https://intl.st/41IM18d #Intelsat60 #liveviasatellite

"Proliferated LEO (PLEO) is not replacing GEO,” said Clare Hopper, chief of the United States Space Force Commercial Satellite Communications Office. In conversation with Rory Welch, Intelsat VP of Global Government Solutions, on stage at the Satellite Industry Association DoD Commercial SATCOM Workshop, Hopper said that she is excited about higher capacity and maneuverable GEO satellites. In addition, the Space Force is optimistic about the future of multi-orbit networks and the emerging terminal capabilities. For Intelsat, Welch explained the future growth is focused on multi-orbit managed services with flexible satellites and an advanced terrestrial network. “Interoperability is key,” as the satellite service needs to operate across multiple networks and layers. #DoD #SATCOM
