Happy Thanksgiving! We’re sending you all warm wishes and safe travels. In this recent acquisition, Aubrey Levinthal depicts a couple—likely modeled after herself and her husband—dining at an airport, highlighting everyday intimacies and tenderness within the banal airport terminal. In her signature hazy style, the couple’s faces begin to merge together, separated only by thin brushstrokes sweeping along their contours. About us
Since its founding in 1936, the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston has shared the pleasures of reflection, inspiration, imagination, and provocation that contemporary art offers with its audiences. A museum at the intersection of contemporary art and civic life, the ICA has advanced a bold vision for amplifying the artist’s voice and augmenting art’s role as educator, incubator, and convener for social engagement. Its innovative exhibitions, performances, and educational programs provide access to contemporary art, artists, and the creative process, inviting audiences of all ages and backgrounds to participate in the excitement of new art and ideas. Spanning two locations across Boston Harbor, the ICA offers year-round programming at its iconic building in Boston’s Seaport and seasonal programming (May–September) at the Watershed in an East Boston shipyard.

A new chapter begins! We are thrilled to welcome Nora Burnett Abrams Abrams as the ICA’s next Ellen Matilda Poss Director. Abrams joins the ICA from Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, where she has served as the Mark G. Falcone Director since 2019. In Denver, she deepened the museum’s role as a catalyst for creative energy, community engagement, and artistic experimentation. An accomplished museum leader and highly regarded curator, Abrams organized more than 40 exhibitions during her 15-year tenure at MCA Denver, presenting work by artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kim Dickey, Tara Donovan, Senga Nengudi, Francesca Woodman, and many more. As director, she expanded MCA Denver’s impact through the opening of a second space, the Holiday Theater, creating a new arts hub for community and artist-driven programming. She also increased learning and leadership opportunities for teens at the museum and grew a range of engaging, multi-disciplinary adult programs.
