About us

Independence Seaport Museum's mission is to discover Philadelphia's river of history and world of connections. We’re all about water! Dive into "River Alive!", an award-winning exhibition that brings the wildlife, science, and wonder of the Delaware River to life. Climb aboard the oldest floating warship in the world on Cruiser OLYMPIA and submerge yourself aboard the World War II-era Submarine BECUNA. Immerse yourself in special interactive exhibits while visiting one of the largest maritime art and artifact collections in North America. In warmer months, join us for a paddle in our boat basin or use your experience to get out onto the river with a kayak excursion. With so much to explore, Independence Seaport Museum is the premier, family-friendly destination on the Penn’s Landing waterfront. The Seaport Museum was founded in 1960 as the Philadelphia Maritime Museum and has become a key component of Philadelphia's waterfront renaissance. We serve 110,000 visitors annually and are accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.

  • Did you know that December 8th is national 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐁𝐞 𝐚 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲? Well, when you’re a historian, or just someone interested in the past, going to a museum or doing research can often feel like you are [a time traveler]. Our Archivist Sarah Augustine gets to feel like this every single day, especially when she processes historical photographs. See if you can spot her “time traveling” in any of the photos above. 🔍 📷 1: This is a photo that is part of the Captain Flood scrapbook in our 𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘶𝘯𝘢 collection. Taken on February 10, 1961, this photo features Commodore Faust, and was taken at the New London Submarine Base while the submarine was stationed there. [Captain Bob Flood Collection, 2012.021] 📷 2: This is a photo from our New York Shipbuilding Collection, featuring the launching ceremony of the 14th ship the company built. New York Shipbuilding was located right across the river in Camden, NJ, and we have an extensive collection of photographs of each ship's launch. 📷 3: This 1905 photograph shows the officers and crew of USS 𝘖𝘭𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘢 under Captain Harrison G.O. Colby, taken on the top deck of the ship. [𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘳𝘶𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘳 𝘖𝘭𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘢 𝘈𝘴𝘴𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯]

  • We had some exciting visitors today at the Independence Seaport Museum. 🛩 The famous Freccee Tricolori of the Italian Air Force flew over the city today as part of their North American tour (something that hasn't happened in over 30 years!). You simply never know what you're going to see down here on the waterfront!

  • Class is in session at the Citizen Science Lab here at ISM! 🍎✏️ The 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐫𝐬 have taken over the space and are providing lessons for museum visitors on 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟏𝟎 𝐀𝐌 𝐭𝐨 𝟏:𝟑𝟎 𝐏𝐌. They cover topics such as river health, the history of Philadelphia’s streams and drains, and share their water testing results.
