Have you ever attended a diversity program where you found yourself looking around the room and thinking that the audience was the choir, that those who needed to hear it, weren't there? Then join in our challenge for an open discussion about diversity, equity, and inclusion with another professional whose diversity is different from yours. IILP's #TalkIntoAction is an excellent opportunity to discuss important issues with someone who may or may not share your views and open someone's eyes (or have your own opened) to a different perspective. We can also feature your #TalkIntoAction conversation on LinkedIn and other social media! D̳e̳t̳a̳i̳l̳s̳ 𝐖𝐇𝐎: Everyone 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓: Spend one hour in conversation with someone who is: * A different gender / race / ethnicity / sexual orientation / gender identity and/or disability; * A person with whom you have never had lunch in a group of fewer than three people; and * A person with whom you have never discussed diversity, equity, or inclusion in any detail. 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍: January and February 2025 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄: In the office, over Zoom, over lunch or dinner, for coffee or cocktails, or anyplace / anytime you and your discussion partner would find comfortable and conversation friendly. 𝐖𝐇𝐘: To encourage open discussion about diversity, equity, and inclusion. 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, and IILP remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the legal profession, even in challenging times. While this year has brought significant setbacks to DEI efforts, we refuse to lose sight of our shared vision of a profession that truly reflects the richness of the communities it serves. Together, we can ensure that this vital work continues and adapts to meet today’s challenges. 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵: Uncover and analyze historical inequities and reveal and connect the impact of implicit biases, offering innovative ideas to build a better, fairer, and more just legal community. 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: Challenge norms and inspire creative, bold thinking to shape actionable solutions for a more inclusive profession. 𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 We know that creating a truly inclusive legal profession is an uphill climb, but with your help, we will continue striving for that future. At IILP we celebrate your unwavering dedication to a profession where everyone has a seat at the table. Thank you for being an integral part of the IILP community. Thank you to the 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀 (“𝗜𝗖𝗦𝗔”) for inviting the 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 to present “𝗗𝗘𝗜 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆𝘀” at your 38th Annual School Law Seminar. Our CEO, Sandra Yamate, was honored to present with Jenny Lee, Ph.D. of Koehler | Dinkel LLC; Jenny delivers one of the best DEI-focused presentations explaining the impact of the 𝘚𝘍𝘍𝘈 ruling that we’ve heard and we hope that we’ll have many more opportunities to collaborate with her. (𝗛𝗨𝗚𝗘 thanks to Josie Gough for connecting IILP with Jenny and inviting her to speak at IILP’s law school class at Loyola University Chicago School of Law!) The ICSA Conference was great! Not only were the other presenters top notch, but those in attendance were impressive as well, among them Michael Hernandez and Kathleen Hirsman. The ICSA staff was amazing. Anyone who’s ever worked with Sandra knows that she finds it challenging to stay abreast of deadlines for submitting materials and PPTs. So, we at IILP were very impressed by the outstanding job the ICSA staff did in organizing and executing this conference and getting Sandra’s submissions in on time, especially Ummehani Faizullabhoy and Karis Li. Someday, Ummehani, you must tell us how you did that!

Sometimes it’s easy to forget how important it is to see what one can be. “𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗿𝘆,” our webinar with the National Native American Bar Association to mark Native American Heritage Month featured an inspiring opportunity to hear from Native American and Native Hawaiian federal judges who are role modeling opportunities to serve on the federal bench. With grace and candor, we heard from 𝗛𝗼𝗻. 𝗔𝗱𝗮 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻, 𝗛𝗼𝗻. 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸, and 𝗛𝗼𝗻. 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗦. 𝗦𝘆𝗸𝗲𝘀 about their career paths and the strength, fortitude, and determination it took to become Article III judges. A huge thanks to these three remarkable jurists, along with our skillful moderator Robert O. Saunooke, and our opening speaker, the legendary 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗮 for an informative and uplifting session! 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐬 (𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬) are the only people in America specifically mentioned by race in the federal Constitution. As a result they have their own Title to the U.S. Code - 25 U.S.C is "Indians", and the Supreme Court has developed a vast body of law defining the terms “Indians” and “Tribes”. Since 1810 no other group or issue has been presented before the Supreme Court more than Native American issues. Nevertheless, there have been few Native Americans serving as Article III judges. • Would a Native American on the federal bench earlier or in greater numbers have influenced or changed the outcomes of pivotal Indian law cases? • What are the barriers Native Americans face in reaching the federal bench that might be different from other groups? • How might the low numbers of Native American federal judges impact students needing role models and the admissions numbers of Native Americans to law school? Please join IILP and the National Native American Bar Association for a discussion and analysis of these questions with several sitting federal judges of Native American ancestry about Native American presence in the U.S. federal courts. It’s often hard to contain the excitement we feel at the Institute for Inclusion in the Legal Profession | IILP. We get to work with SO many amazing people! Right now, we’re busy cheering on Jousef Shkoukani, a co-chair of our Social Impact Incubator – Cohort 2 and an associate with Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P. Jousef is campaigning for the 5th District Elected School Board for the Chicago Public Schools and recently participated in a candidates’ debate organized by the Chicago Westside Branch of the NAACP and moderated by Remel Terry. We were curious about what motivated a busy young associate to want to take on this additional work. His response: "I want to take a proactive approach to the education system in which I hope to raise my children—fighting for equitable funding for neighborhood schools, protecting selective enrollment options, and empowering parents to choose the best educational path for their children." We’re persuaded. 𝐆𝐨, 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐟!
