Han Shen is not your average VC. As the founding partner of iFly.vc, Han is on a mission to invest in gritty entrepreneurs transforming traditional industries across commerce and beyond. In this week’s episode, Han joins me to discuss his contrarian approach to investing, the importance of founder-market fit, and how his immigrant background shapes his unique perspective. We also dive deep into why iFly VC takes a highly concentrated portfolio approach, how Han spots opportunities others overlook, and his incredible journey partnering with companies like Weee! and Ume Tea to create billion-dollar outcomes. Han’s insights on conviction-driven investing, growth mindsets, and navigating underserved markets are lessons every founder and investor should hear. BobaGate: Culture Appropriation or Culture Inspiration? In a recent episode of Dragons’ Den, the Canadian equivalent of Shark Tank, actor Simu Liu, best known for his role in Marvel’s Shang-Chi, expressed frustration with a CPG startup that sells boba tea and claims other boba drinks are inferior. This moment has sparked heated discussions on social media, with accusations of cultural appropriation and misrepresentation at the center of the discussion. (Watch the entire episode linked in the comments - Dragons' Den, Simu Liu's Reaction, along with the comments by our friend Dave Lu) I want to commend Simu Liu for his willingness to speak up on behalf of the Asian community. His voice and platform help shine a spotlight on important cultural conversations that need to be had, especially at a time when the power of cultural identity is becoming increasingly recognized in business and beyond. My number of social media followers doesn’t come anywhere close to Simu’s. Still, I want to share my voice, never give up an opportunity to speak up, and turn each dialogue into a potential opportunity for collaboration and partnership. This ties into a broader trend I have observed - American consumer products and services increasingly inspired by Asian cultures. 📓 Want to read more? Follow the link below to read and subscribe!

We had an incredible time at this year's Texas Venture Fest, Oct 3rd. Partnering with The Red Fridge Society and a fantastic lineup of organizations like BuildGroup, Ballistic Ventures, FirstMile Ventures, Ionic Partners, Restive Ventures, International Accelerator, LiveOak Ventures, Next Coast Ventures, Silverton Partners, S3 Ventures, Moneta Ventures, and so many more made this event truly one of a kind. This collaboration brings together the venture community to spotlight and strengthen the startup support network across Texas, showcasing the wealth of resoruces available throughout the state. A huge thank you to CS Freeland and her entire team of entrepreneurs, volunteers, and leaders for making this event happen. We're already looking forward to next year! #TexasEntrepreneur #StartupEcosystem #Venture #Startups #Network
