A doozy of an event to end the year with. The EM-Spire conference hosted by Guidehouse and American Red Cross shone a spotlight on the use of data to support resilience in emergencies. A consistent theme was the importance of combining data use with human insights from communities. Because the resilience of those who support communities has a vital impact on recovery outcomes, I had the opportunity to share qualitative data that really helps us understand how to support the supporters. Thanks Matt Lyttle, CEM, PMP for the invite. A fantastic group of speakers focusing on innovation and the future, all looking to better outcomes for communities. So much food for thought. My last work trip of the year. Can't wait to see what 2025 will bring. #emergencymanagementinnovation #dataforresilience #sustainingthesupporters #communityrecovery

  • In the early morning of September 14, a fire tore through downtown Oxford in Pennsylvania, destroying heritage buildings and displacing 26 families. While this tragedy may not have hit the national headlines, its impact on those who lost their homes is no less significant. The need for ongoing resources and community care remains vital for those rebuilding their lives. We recently received a lovely note and photo from Melissa (DeLong) Pacella at SILO - a local non-profit walking alongside these households as they navigate recovery; many with English as their second language. Hummingly’s Cards for Calamity were used in an event with those impacted, helping to spark sharing and healing. “It was a nice event. Having the cards in Spanish was a huge help - most people were Spanish speaking. I spread Spanish and English cards on the tables and people spoke up and responded to a card of their choice. It also helped people acknowledge past trauma. All good results. Thank you again for having this translated into Spanish.” Hosting a ‘disastrous dinner with a difference’, using the Cards for Calamity, is an incredibly powerful way to support community conversations and healing for those impacted by disaster. The cards are also a helpful way to support great local organizations who hold the deep connections with their communities and those affected. It’s people like Melissa and organizations like SILO that are doing the important work with communities and we’re proud to support. #cardsforcalamity #disasterrecovery #supportinglocal #equitablerecovery

Just returned from my third visit to Maui in support of the incredible locals on the ground doing the hard work of fire recovery. Obvious was: 🔶 the hard-won progress 🔶 the ongoing struggle 🔶 the relentless effort and care 🔶 the fatigue 🔶 the holding of hope and possibility 🔶 just how incredible this place, these communities and the people who are working so hard to support recovery really are. A quick summary of these images: 🔷A local rightfully proud of the thriving plants and improvements on his cleared lot as a first step towards rebuilding 'home' 🔷Leading a workshop for recovery leaders, with the Cards for Calamity 🔷Temporary accommodation pods newly opened and more to come, overlooking Lahaina Thank you to Jennifer Gray Thompson, MPA of After the Fire USA for a great support delegation, Tatiana Hernandez, Jenn Kaaoush, Paul Lowenthal, Reva Feldman, and to Natalie Minuzzo for the behind the scenes support. #disasterrecovery #mauirecovery #firerecovery #supportinglocalrecovery

"This training felt really different. We weren't lectured at. It was just what we needed, delivered in just the right way." Last week, beautiful Summit County beckoned. An amazing day full of meaningful conversations, connection and practical tools to sustain the wellbeing and work of the Human Services team - a team dedicated to supporting their communities up in this beautiful snowy mountain location. Thank you Janet Wolfson and Joanne Sprouse for having me, and for your care for your team - setting them up to sustain the incredible work they do. #WellbeingUnderPressure #ServingCommunities #TeamWork

⛈🔥 🌪The road to recovery after disaster is much longer and harder without a sense of the journey ahead. Hummingly created the Cards for Calamity to help guide locals through the long haul of recovery. Why is supporting locals with recovery knowledge so important?  We know it is the locals who will drive and support recovery for communities long after the sirens and media have disappeared. It is locals who can best put recovery knowledge to use as they: 🔶lead their households through recovery, 🔶support their neighbors 🔶advocate for and make informed decisions for their communities. Across the US, the Cards for Calamity are being used to curate conversation, support connection and aid collective healing in communities, including through events such as Disastrous Dinner with a Difference (https://lnkd.in/gJQrw6p5) Reach out if you'd like to know more about supporting locals as agents of disaster recovery in their households and communities. #DisasterRecovery #CommunityDrivenRecovery #CardsForCalamity
