Today we recognize the tremendous legacy of Jerome "Jerry" Sincoff who served as HOK's CEO from 1990 to 2000. Jerry passed away December 18 at the age of 91. Under his leadership, HOK grew dramatically, expanding from 14 to 20 offices worldwide and nearly doubling its workforce to 1,600 people, with new studios in Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, London, Toronto and Dubai. A skilled architect and project manager, Jerry also led some of the firm's most complex and largest-scale projects, including the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., and Bristol-Myers Squibb's Headquarters in New Jersey. “Jerry approached every challenge with optimism and warmth,” recalled HOK Co-CEO Susan Klumpp Williams. “He had the unique ability to develop a clear vision for the firm and then bring everyone together to achieve it.” Beyond HOK, Jerry helped create the AIA's Large Firm Roundtable and was the first architect to lead the Construction Industry Round Table. In his hometown of St. Louis, Jerry took leadership roles at the Saint Louis Art Museum—as both trustee and commission president—and was a long-time member and supporter of United Hebrew Congregation. His alma mater, Washington University in St. Louis, awarded him with its Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004, and Jerry sat on numerous boards for the university, even stepping in as dean of both the College of Architecture and the Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design in 2005 and 2006. Why are NHL arenas designed the way they are? That’s what NHL writer James Mirtle wanted to know when he sat down with HOK’s Bill Johnson, FAIA and Scott Ralston. Check out the full conversation in The Athletic (link below) and continue on for 3 highlights.   1. Size: While most NHL arenas have a seating capacity around 20,000, it is possible to design bigger. “An arena’s capacity is more of a business decision than an architectural one,” said Scott. “It’s all about knowing your market and making sure your supply of seats meets the anticipated demand.” 2. Design: Modern arenas aim to be more than just game-day attractions with external programming and design that celebrates regional culture throughout the year. “This kind of contextual design creates a community landmark instead of just another arena," said Scott. 3. Options: Fans are looking for more immersive experiences and today’s arenas are delivering. “There’s a trend toward social interaction on game day at the arena,” said Bill. “Fans want to move throughout the facility and experience first-class amenities and socialization opportunities at bars, clubs, suites and more. These opportunities become ‘Instagram-able’ moments that can be shared in real time.” #nhl #arenadesign #hoksport https://lnkd.in/gt-hsPEf

𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧! This year's Ideas Competition challenged HOK team members to explore the future of healthcare design under the theme “Reimagining Health." Finalists were awarded a cash prize, and the winning team received an exploratory research grant for their idea. From submissions across the firm, the jury unanimously selected Team Reach as the winner. Their proposal for a modular and scalable clinic embodied a positive and aspirational solution for communities. Team Weekend Innovators was runner-up for their technologically forward series of diagnostic modules that captured the jury's imagination. "Our annual Ideas Competition represents HOK's limitless capacity for multidisciplinary research and discovery," said Loren Supp, host of the Ideas Competition and co-chair of HOK's Design Board. "This year's theme around creating a vision for the future of healthcare showcases the need for strong connection between people and the built environment." We look forward to seeing how these ideas evolve in the future. Explore samples of the 2024 Ideas Competition winner, runner up and finalists below.

We're not saying we are the sole reason behind Southern Methodist University's resurgence to the top of college football, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 we did design the team's new training complex. 🤔😎 Sports Dissected recently gave the Mustangs' south end zone complex a visit. Check out the behind-the-scenes video here: https://lnkd.in/g4PNXFP3 (Images below show just some of the highlights!) Finally, best of luck to the SMU Mustangs and all 12 teams playing in this year's College Football Playoffs. HOK is honored to count many of them as clients. #HOKsports #stadiumdesign #collegefootball

𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞! We are excited to share the latest updates on the renovation of Stockholm’s Avicii Arena. Crews are at work installing a unique retractable ceiling that will transform and optimize the venue’s look and acoustics based on event type. When not in use, the ceiling’s moveable panels can be parked out of sight, allowing unobstructed views of the building’s incredible domed ceiling. Gondola seating is also being added to the arena. Inspired by a similar product at the HOK-designed Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, the seating will bring fans closer to the ice, pitch or stage than ever before. HOK is collaborating on the arena’s retrofit and upgrade on behalf of SGA Fastigheter (owned by the city of Stockholm) and NCC with C.F. Møller Architects, schlaich bergermann partner sbp, Ramboll, Efterklang, Light Bureau and AFRY. The arena is set to reopen in February 2025. Great to join the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) for the groundbreaking of its new Tallahassee facility! The state-of-the-art building will house approximately 940 employees currently spread across 13 divisions. In so doing, it is expected to provide efficiencies that will save the department—and Florida taxpayers—more than $70 million over the next 30 years. “The new facility is more than just a building—it’s a symbol of FDACS’ commitment to Florida’s agricultural community and consumers,” said Commissioner Wilton Simpson. “With spaces to facilitate training, collaboration, and emergency response, the facility will serve as a hub for our mission to support and promote Florida agriculture, protect the environment, safeguard consumers, ensure the safety and wholesomeness of food, and so much more.” The FDACS facility is one of several big HOK-designed projects now under construction in the Sunshine State. Others include Royal Caribbean’s new headquarters in Port-Miami, the Miami-Dade County Civil Courthouse, Sarasota County Administration Center and the Orlando Health Children’s Pavilion.
