During the 1918-1919 tourist season, the Board of Trade retained the services of John Lodwick as the city’s first publicity director. Lodwick, who was born on this date in 1890, had worked for several years promoting sporting events in Ohio. His grand scheme was to turn St. Petersburg into a sporting capital, hosting a multitude of “world championships” throughout the year. The publicity would place millions of dollars worth of advertising in northern Newspapers and Movies for free. Selling St. Pete until the end, Lodwick died while still working for the Board in 1942.

On December 7, 1941 Japanese planes flew over Hawaii and destroyed or damaged 19 US warships and 300 aircraft in less than 90 minutes. The attack on Pearl Harbor, which killed 2,390 service members and civilians, led to the United States entering World War II on December 8th. Days later, Germany and Italy declared war, bringing the country into a global war. Over 250,000 Floridians joined the fight, and nearly 200 cities throughout the state were transformed into training bases. St. Petersburg served as a major center for training over 100,000 U.S. Maritime and Army Air Corps cadets.
