During his career as an accomplished higher education professional, he served as the president of Cambridge College, Stephen F. Austin State University and the University of Southern Colorado. 🚨Deadline: Feb 2. In 2014 my application for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) HNIP Program was accepted. At the time I had to make a tough decision walk a different path. However knowing that the opportunities that come from this program open big doors🏛️, I highly recommend applying. To any college student out there looking for an opportunity, you are just one essay away.

This fall, I had the opportunity to be a mentee under Ana Hummes, PhD as part of Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) HNIP’s Pilot Mentorship program in association with the USDA. Ana Hummes, working at the USDA in R&D in soil sciences, has imparted valuable and lifelong skills to me concerning professional development, specifically resume and LinkedIn prep. I am very appreciative for her guidance this term. I am also very appreciative of Jose Luis Perez, Ph.D., who connected me to this pilot mentorship program.

Paid internships for all majors! 🤓

It has been an incredible two years of service as a Commissioner on President Biden's Advisory Commission for Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Hispanics, under the leadership of Chairman Jules Buenabenta. I served on the Advancing Higher Education and Hispanic Service Institutions committee with my colleagues Havidán Rodríguez, Cristóbal Rodríguez, and Pedro A. Noguera. It began with a nomination from Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), thank you Dr. Antonio Flores and Dr. Lena Rodriguez. This resulted in an invitation to witness a historic signing of an MOU with HACU and the Secretary of State Antony Blinken at the State Department in October 2022. The Commissioners were sworn in on May 10, 2023 by Vice President Harris at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB) adjacent to the West Wing. This led to several Commission meetings, one held at Arizona State University in downtown Phoenix in September 2023. Two invitations to attend Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations at the White House led to meeting leaders and advocates for advancing Hispanic Initiatives, including the indomitable Dolores Huerta. A Commission meeting in January 2024 at the historic United States Commerce Research Library, where Bobby Ruiz joined me, included an opportunity to see the famed bowling alley in the basement of the EEOB! A once-in-a-lifetime experience to attend a gathering of Latino community leaders at the Vice President's residence, and a final commission meeting in early December 2024. While we made several recommendations to President Biden through Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, the recommendation that is most significant led to President Biden signing Executive Order 14124 establishing, at the U.S. Department of Education, the White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity Through Hispanic-Serving Institutions (Initiative) and a President’s Board of Advisors on Hispanic-Serving Institutions. Thank you to Emmanuel Caudillo, Melody Gonzales, Jasmin Chavez Cruz, Kevin Lima, and all the Interns who supported the Commission. Your talent and dedication will lead you to wonderful and impactful careers. Thank you to all the Commissioners, it was an honor to serve with you. As my internship with the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture comes to an end, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) for this incredible opportunity. This experience has been nothing short of transformative, both professionally and personally. Visiting our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., for the first time was an unforgettable milestone, and having the chance to tour the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and U.S. Secret Service and meet dedicated professionals who serve our nation was truly inspiring. Thank you, HACU, for opening doors to these unique opportunities and for your unwavering support in helping students like me achieve our goals. I’m beyond grateful for this journey and excited for what’s to come!
