  • As a Fractional CMO, I am often in client or customer discussions that evolve into either qualitative or quantitative research requests. Many, many articles along with ramping media buzz describes artificial intelligence as being the "wild west" and sometimes deemed off the rails without true bumpers to ethically keep it all in check. While that may be true, I know many companies and creatives such as Erich Archer that are making the best out of the hand that's dealt. Now we have synthetic data. Truthfully, synthetic data has been around for a long time, but it's only now getting really interesting. Why? Because the data generated is getting better or at least we're all trusting that it's getting better. Maybe the quality of the data is one giant leap forward to trust but not verify. Or perhaps we all need to be verifying the results a little more than we are currently doing today. Maybe using the 80-20 rule. Either way, I for see more AI compliance coming into the fold. MarketingWeek recently released an article claiming that "AI customers can now deliver a 95% match to real survey results, which will ultimately feed a fully automated process of marketing strategy and execution." Source: https://lnkd.in/ekbBPbSJ That's pretty powerful if true. At least to a Chief Marketing Officer. In short, synthetic data is using artificial intelligent data sources to formulate research outcomes or to provide strategic context. Some call it "artificially generated" data that simulates real-world data. This is all pretty fascinating but it could also be very scary if there isn't more clarity around ethical checks and balances. I'd love to get your thoughts on synthetic data and whether or not, we need more oversight into real qualified results. But... I know what you might be thinking. Your version of REAL is different than mine so why can't AI define it's version of REAL. Many CMO's that I am talking to believe that the results are too watered down to give any REAL client direction. Perhaps we're also just trying to feel needed. But, like with any new technology, we have to remember that it won't take long for the AI "wild west" to soon be "Wall Street" AI trusted. So, if your agency isn't using synthetic data to do Model Training and Validation, Scenario Testing, Data Augmentation or A/B Experimentation...well, you're likely falling behind.     In winning new sales opportunities, you won't always be dealt a hand full of aces. You may be overlooking key relationships that you've nurtured for years that could open new doors... But you didn't think to ask THEM for a connection. One of my clients currently have an incredible product, extremely high customer reviews, but have never asked their network to refer them to others. We created a connected referral program that offered incentives to spread the word and Shazam. New client relationships started building. Moral of the story is... Don't be afraid to ask for referrals. It's likely that your network wants to help you create new business relationships.
