Exactly 5 years ago, rumours emerged about a series of "suspected pneumonia" cases in the Chinese city of Wuhan. We know what happened next. The impacts of Covid-19 changed the course of modern history. National, regional and global political landscapes continue to re-shape, geo-economics are following fragmented new paths, terrifying conflicts have emerged. The rollover effects of locked borders, stalled production lines, supply chain dislocations and surging inflation and interest rates are still felt in much of the world. And, of course, the travel industry (especially in Asia, where the border closures lasted longest) is still - at the end of 2024 - looking backwards to 2019 for its benchmark metrics. And variants of Covid are still mutating. This photo, taken in the elevator of a smart London hotel this weekend, is a salutary reminder of the enduring impact of a serious global disease outbreak - and a warning about taking lightly the possibility of another pandemic.
