Guided by a holistic approach to student wellness, the highly accessible University of California, Riverside Student Health and Counseling Center offers a range of vital services. From primary care to women’s health, laboratory and pharmacy to counseling: students find the resources they need. All framed by views of the Box-Spring Mountains. The center fosters a connection to nature with a well-appointed, multipurpose outdoor space and large windows that prioritize natural lighting. Its calming, biophilic design is anchored by wooden accents and pastel colors that feel as if they were blown in from the not-so-distant peaks. Health equity is the fervent belief that every person should have the opportunity to achieve their highest level of health. Regardless of socioeconomic status, race, gender, ability, or geographic location. In healthcare design, this concept goes beyond providing access to care. In this recent Insights piece, Senior Design Researcher, Terri Zborowsky, and Vice President of Equity, Terri Howard, discuss the responsibilities we carry as stewards of the built environment. From addressing disparities to creating a sense of belonging—health equity aligns with the building industry’s growing awareness to support positive social change through design. ➡ https://lnkd.in/edkazgxB

Blending time-tested historical elements with a forward-looking perspective, the Woodies Building is the perfect home for HGA D.C. as its design inherently parallels our firm's DNA. This former flagship department store boasts 16-foot ceilings, 12-foot windows, open floor plans, and views of the lively downtown thoroughfare it lines. The more than 17,000 square foot workspace was carefully curated by a multifaceted team of HGA architects, interior designers, engineers, and other key collaborators. Perfectly suited for hybrid work, the office offers HGA colleagues throughout the DMV a variety of seating options, enhanced technology to accommodate remote and in-person team members, as well as an intuitive desk and resource reservation system in this well-connected hub. Currently the largest healthcare construction project in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania—and most monumental in the hospital's history—the inpatient tower at UPMC Presbyterian is a truly transformative venture. With the topping out taking place earlier this year, construction will complete on this 1.2 million square foot tower in late 2026. Adding 636 private patient rooms to the network's capacity, and supporting well-being for the whole community. Learn about the interactive processes that ensure we design spaces that empower caregivers to simplify treatment and enhance person-to-person connection: ➡ https://lnkd.in/eznfK3br While the project's scope and scale are truly impressive, what's more so is the wide ranging team of experts working tirelessly toward a shared vision of success. "Every building has a responsibility to respect the environment not only for energy and water but also animals," shares Dan Kalkman, senior project architect with HGA. "The reality is that bird populations have declined by nearly 3 billion birds since 1970." To bring greater attention to this issue, BUILDINGS spoke with Kalkman and other experts about designing with bird safety in mind. They discuss how measures such as patterned and mirrored glass, decorative glazing, and reduced lighting play major roles in ensuring bird safety. These efforts work hand-in-hand with a number of other sustainability initiatives from energy, to daylighting, and landscaping. When intentionally wielded by an experienced design team, they also enhance the aesthetic presence of any building. The neoclassical Union Depot in St. Paul, Minnesota, designed by architect Charles Sumner Frost in the 1920s, was the “Gateway to the West” until it was shuttered in 1971. Years later, our team worked diligently with the Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority to restore and transform the Union Depot into a 21st century hub. The design combines historic restoration and new construction with extensive infrastructure and civil engineering upgrades. Details include a new main entrance, a modernized train deck with public park amenities and a refurbished grand waiting room with restored skylights, once blacked out for fear of air raids during World War II. Union Depot also includes extensive space for events, arts and cultural programming, providing opportunities for the public to enjoy this beautiful building once again. 📍 Union Depot | St. Paul, MN 📸 Paul Crosby
