The ALS Association is proud to invest $400,000 in groundbreaking research at the University of Pittsburgh to advance Stretch, a robot by Hello Robot, designed to help people with ALS manage everyday tasks. From grabbing a cup of water to picking up items from the floor, Stretch is being fine-tuned to assist people with ALS at every stage of their journey, with the hope of giving them greater independence as the disease progresses. I'd like to introduce what I've been working on the last few months at Hello Robot Inc: Stretch AI, a set of open-source tools for language-guided autonomy, exploration, navigation, and learning from demonstration. The goal is to allow researchers and developers to quickly build and deploy AI-enabled robot applications. Stretch AI is designed so that you can easily get started and try it out on your robot. It supports multiple LLMs, from open-source models like Qwen to OpenAI. You can even do voice control of the robot, talk to it, and have it clean up your floor! Open-source AI enabled home robot with voice chat. Tell it what to do and it will try to clean up your home for you. This is locally running Qwen2.5 on my desktop. No need to send information from your home to the cloud.
A big congratulations to the team working with Stretch at Ai2 PRIOR, who won Best Mobile Manipulation Paper at #IROS2024 for their work on Harmonic Mobile Manipulation, then followed up by winning joint Outstanding Paper at #CoRL2024 for Poliformer - a transformer-based policy trained using RL at scale in simulation. Humanoid robots are cool and all, but for help in the home, right now, you need a robot that's simple, affordable and versatile. (Also, one that won't intimidate you into avoiding it.) In this conversation with Charlie Kemp of Hello Robot Inc, we talked about all he's learned over years of work on Stretch, an assistive robot that has been used to farm tomatoes, do physical therapy, help immobile people play with kids, and even scratch an itch. (Kemp has also used the Stretch to remotely feed his cat.) We talked about finding the sweet spot where affordability, user-friendliness and usefulness meet, what users have taught robot-makers, and a lot of other things.
