Our Wollert Resource Park Project Manager, Rachael Quinlan, explains why community engagement is so important for building a sustainable environment across our sites. “At our Resource Park in Wollert, Victoria, we are showcasing our dedication to an end-to-end approach to sustainability, as outlined in our Sustainability Charter. I’m proud to say that our site serves as a model for waste management, resource recovery and renewable energy processes. Part of our dedication to sustainability is engaging with our community through different initiatives and collaboration. One successful collaboration is with social enterprise nugal biik Plants and Seeds, a local plant and seeds nursery specialising in indigenous flora. Our Wollert site was their first customer, ordering over 25,000 tube stock plants. Over the last two years nugal biik have come to our site and collected seed from our indigenous plants that have already been planted and established on our phytocap. A phytocap is designed to emulate what a synthetic capping system does, which is to mitigate fugitive landfill gas emissions and water ingress to the landfill. This minimises leachate production (leachate is a contaminated liquid that forms through the degradation process of the waste and when water comes into contact with or percolates through the waste). The collected seeds from our site are propagated back at their nursery. We have ordered these plants from the nursery for our future phytocap at the landfill. This is a great example of the circular economy at play.” #sustainablesolutions #circulareconomy #sustainability
