Chief Experience Officer & Healthcare UX Thought Leader. Improving and sustaining better health outcomes through transforming digital healthcare experiences.

I’ve been on a mission to improve healthcare UX for decades. These are 10 myths and realities of healthcare UX: Myth 1: People will still use healthcare UX that isn’t optimal. Reality: Patients ignore experiences they don’t find valuable. Only 3% of patients use pharma-sponsored patient support programs, but 44% say they want to use them online. (1) Myth 2: New trends and technology (like AI) can solve many of the existing problems. Reality: Shiny new “gimmicks” tailored to stakeholders – and not for patients – only contribute to existing problems. Myth 3: Healthcare UX is no different from UX in general. Reality: Helping to care for one’s health requires more profound empathy and guidance than the general consumer experience. Myth 4: Healthcare UX should only address patient needs. Reality: Patients are the priority, but healthcare UX should cater to caregivers, clinicians, and staff. Myth 5: Patients are a homogeneous group. Reality: Healthcare UX needs to appeal to nuanced behaviors, needs, and preferences depending on the patient's demographic and medical condition. Myth 6: UX is all about usability (ease of use). Reality: While ease of use is important, healthcare UX more broadly addresses usefulness, completeness, and the overarching objective of improving healthcare outcomes. Myth 7: Healthcare UX is only relevant to online interfaces and tools. Reality: Digital experiences should equally consider physical spaces like doctor offices and hospitals where patients, clinicians, and caregivers interact with their environments. Myth 8: User experiences in healthcare are subjective and not measurable. Reality: The Digital Experience Scale for Patients (DES/P) is a framework that accurately measures the digital patient experience with direct input from patients. Myth 9: It’s challenging to create fully patient-centric experiences in healthcare. Reality: Testing with just five users is typically sufficient to discover and fix 85% of UX issues. (2) Myth 10: Investing in healthcare UX makes no difference and is hard to quantify. Reality: Gartner reports that more than two-thirds of companies now compete primarily based on customer experience. (3) As UX practitioners, it’s our responsibility to debunk these myths. Why? Demystifying healthcare UX is the first step toward improving it.

  • There is a focus on macroresearch with individual patient applications, so a patient agrees to share data for research and in return, gets better information for their own health within a specific demographic. But more and more, there is a need for automation in helathcare, as worker shortages increase There is so much untapped potential in healthcare automation.

  • Exactly right. Any significant change in healthcare has to be done with intention for it to have positive impact, and AI is no exception

  • Many facilities are addressing burnout with band aid solutions. What we need is to create a system that doesn't overwork our healthcare professionals and practitioners. Right now, they are wasting precious time on administrative tasks and slow systems. We owe it to them to fix these systems. That's the only long term solution to burnout: fixing the system itself.
