A vulnerable section of railroad along the NO&M Subdivision, near the Louisiana and Mississippi border, is prone to service outages from strong waves and rising water levels during hurricanes and severe storms. Omaha Public Library’s Downtown Branch was awarded the 2024 Best of Design Award for Adaptive-Reuse Education from The Architect's Newspaper. Originally built in 1912 as the Dale Cole Creamery Co., the historic building was transformed into a vibrant center for learning and community connection. While honoring its past with exposed brick and restored creamery tiles, the design also embraces technology, modern finishes and flexible spaces that can adapt to future needs. Earlier this week, nearly 900 employees attended IMPACT, our internal global conference held every other year for the Architecture and Building Engineering Services business groups. Over three days, attendees networked, engaged with practice leadership and participated in tailored educational sessions. From designing net-zero buildings to navigating the digital landscape, the theme, "People, Passion, Planet," inspired attendees to understand how we can help make meaningful, positive and long-lasting changes within the industry, the built environment and beyond.
