Ariel Redmond & I hit our four year "full-time-iversary" at Happy Box this fall. I've been trying to savor this milestone, because it's SO EASY as an entrepreneur to forget to celebrate the wins. We're frankly too busy putting out fires. IYKYK. I remember that day in October 2020. I was physically shaking. Quitting a stable job I really liked at a really cool company during a pandemic felt insane. And so many well-meaning & concerned friends and family planted doubt: "Are you SURE this is the right time???” My then-boss told me I hadn't thought it all through, and that I’d “better be prepared to consult to at least pay the bills.” She didn’t even respond to my goodbye email thanking her for her leadership. But, Ariel is a hype-woman by nature and ALL she could do was go on and on and on about the possibilities - “think of how much more we could grow! Think of what we can BUILD!” So, we did it. Some years have been awesome and some years have been exhausting. We've made the Inc. 5000. We've been on the Drew Barrymore Show. We've had some AMAZING corporate clients. But we've also had to downsize at times. We've lost big clients due to budget cuts. BUT, net net, we’ve MADE IT 4 years full-time in the business & evolved in major ways to stay relevant & profitable when 50%+ of businesses fail by now. And I know that number is even higher when you’re self funded, like us. We've been able to build a great team of passionate people who are also fueled by our mission. Recently went to a great event hosted by HubSpot For Startups with Ariel and got to hear lots of great applicable content marketing nuggets listening to a panel with Ben Sharf (Platter) & Toby Howell (Morning Brew Pod) that focused on founder-led content marketing & AI. Key things that spoke to me: ✨ Just get started posting from my/Ariel's POV. Don't worry about being cringey, just start posting. ✨ Be consistent in creation. Most podcasts (for example) don't make it much past 20 episodes. ✨ Don't stop even if you haven't figured it all out. Most followers/viewers/listeners won't remember your first post/episode. Content thematics can evolve and you may want to try different things - and that's ok. It's funny, when you're an entrepreneur lucky enough to experience fast growth, you're so frantically learning HOW to do so many things OUTSIDE of your wheelhouse/expertise that you almost forget to check the boxes of the things you're ACTUALLY GOOD AT or at least know how to do. My former career was brand and content marketing - and this was a GREAT reminder that I need to re-visit that side of my business Happy Box . With the tips and advice we got, I'm pretty excited about it :) Oh & bonus of the day - we also got to bump into a familiar face - Kelly Anne Parker!
