I'm back in the groove! 🔋 I’ve always wanted to attend a HackSummit since becoming a ClimateHack ambassador in Istanbul. Although I couldn’t make it to Lausanne, I was thrilled when the summit came to New York, giving me the opportunity to meet inspiring individuals I’ve worked with or followed closely, and to taste products I’ve been curious about for a while! The most memorable part of the summit for me was meeting Coline Jeannet, Laura Hodgkiss, Fascal Hukker, Emilie Dellecker, and Arman Anatürk in person after a year of online meetings! Before unpacking the details, a huge thank you to the entire team for making it all possible. 💫 Directly tied to my research, here are some highlights of the summit: 🪨 Cody Finke, Ph.D., founder of Brimstone — which produces Portland cement—one of the most common types of cement—using calcium silicate rock instead of limestone. With the growing demand driven by the rise of data centers and growing infrastructure, it’s surprising that this critical issue isn’t higher on our collective agenda. ⚓ Alisha Fredriksson, founder of Seabound— that develops carbon capture equipment for large cargo ships, installing near the funnel to capture up to 95% of CO2 emissions from the exhaust directly. ⚗️ Etosha (Eee-tah-sha) Cave, founder of Twelve— a carbon transformation company that uses electrochemistry to convert CO2 into chemicals, materials, and fuels, with their novel catalyst which electrifies CO2 and water to produce oxygen, syngas (CO + H2), and water as outputs. ↳ During the same panel, we have heard from Cyrus Wadia, CEO of Activate, which plays an important role in bridging the gap between research and commercialization. 💲 Alfred Johnson, founder of Crux— a capital markets platform revolutionizing clean energy and manufacturing project financing in the U.S. by enabling the transfer of tax credits, which has gained significant importance for clean energy and manufacturing in the U.S., due to the increased volume of credits available and the expanded range of technologies eligible for tax credits following the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). I also had a great conversation with John Morrow, learning about 3M's efforts to innovate sorbents to help advance decarbonization and direct air capture, a great example of how industry leaders can play a role in this journey. On the tasty side of things, I was thrilled to try BettaFish, Oshi, Stockeld Dreamery, Atomo Coffee, and Plantega. They’re all incredibly delicious! To end on a high note, meeting Terrance Knox from Climeworks was the highlight of the event for me! Looking forward to hearing more about their U.S. expansion, and the upcoming projects in the #GreatRiftValley in #Kenya! A special shoutout to my partner in crime since I moved to the U.S.: Mwiti Mugambi #HackSummitNYC

Am I the only one who gets back from a conference and is like a week late to follow up + recap? To recap my main take away from - 𝗠𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀: 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. Still feeling energized from last week, when I helped to run HackGroup’s first-ever US HackSummit: Climate x Deep Tech! Huge thanks to Emilie Dellecker, Fascal Hukker, Coline Jeannet, Laura Hodgkiss and team for such an inspiring experience ⚡️ This year, HackSummit expanded in 2 key ways: 🇨🇭→ 🇺🇸: Past HackSummits have all been in Lausanne, Switzerland, but major interest from US companies inspired their decision to expand to NYC this year! 🍔 → 🔋: HackGroup has its roots in food innovation (see FoodHack), but this HackSummit showcased a broad range of climate tech across food/ag, energy, carbon removal, and more. Being an energy nerd, I was especially excited to check out startups and panel discussions on clean energy tech, which featured prominently on Day 2: 💡 I loved the talks by Christopher Kemper, Jason Hamilton, and Michael Bratsafolis (Palmetto) on navigating energy tech strategy in a shifting landscape, and Lauren Salz (Sealed) on capturing market share in building energy efficiency. Super cool to dive into both companies’ tech and data capabilities! (Plus see them in action — Michael and Stefano Polloni demoed their latest beta product that estimates home energy usage and electrification savings: https://lnkd.in/eAFeqVKg) 🤝 Palmetto and Sealed both emphasized meeting the customer where they are — a critical factor in their success. For Sealed, it involved literally meeting contractors in person at their offices. Lauren shared how her team built trusting relationships and formed a unique understanding of their contractors’ cost challenges. This enabled them to turn the contractors from rebate skeptics into enthusiasts and capture 75% of the market in certain geographies! In my conversations with technologists, I’ve been struck by a surprising common thread: non-technical factors (e.g., customer experience, stakeholder engagement) often turn out to be the game-changer. Other big highlights of the HackSummit NYC experience: 🐟 Mind-blowing vegan food! I’ve hesitated on going vegan because I love cheese and fish… but the vegan cream cheese from Stockeld Dreamery and the vegan salmon (!!) from Oshi were shockingly delicious. 10/10 would eat again. I’m also super into coffee (and worried about its future in a changing climate), but if the hybrid coffee from Atomo Coffee is that future, I can rest easy. Those were some of the best lattes I’ve had this year. 🌱 Super cool startup fair! Big thanks to Terrance Knox at Climeworks, Mark Fridlyand at Synonym, Nat Robinson and Greg D'Alesandre at Terraton, Tiegeng (Tim) Ren at REON Technology, Gabe Tavas at Symmetry Wood, and others for chatting about product and growth with me!
