About us

Chicago is a unique city, full of grit, determination and possibility—and we're excited to be a part of it. Committed to the betterment of all residents, our goal is to provide the one in 10 people facing inadequate housing with a decent place to call home. We put residents first. - We collaborate with residents to ensure our work aligns with the dreams they have for their community. We think in assets, not deficits. - Every neighborhood we work in presents its own opportunities. It's our job to highlight them, so that everything unique about an area can be celebrated. We locate the perfect partners. - Due to the complexity of family and community health, we seek out other organizations who can help us meet needs holistically. We embrace planning. - Significant change requires significant planning, so we embrace multi-party, multi-year efforts that will benefit more people in the Chicago area. We invest in homeownership. - The ability to own a home changes families, neighborhoods and even generations. We are expanding our services so that more families will experience long-term success.

  • In 2018, a four-person Habitat Chicago team traveled to South Bend, IN, to help build on the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Jeff Jozwiak, a former Habitat Chicago board member and Norcon's Principal and co-founder, recalls, “The President and First Lady’s presence was truly inspirational. Their decades of commitment and the extraordinary amount of their personal time spent on Habitat, combined with their unwavering dedication to continue to be present for us at that stage of their lives, put a spring in everyone’s step.” May President and Rosalynn Carter’s legacy of service to others be an example to all and provide the spring in your step as you enter 2025. #HonoringCarter

  • At Habitat Chicago, we believe “home” is more than just a house. In addition to our affordable homeownership programs, we provide grants to neighborhood residents, helping fund resident-led projects that beautify our communities and strengthen social ties, much like the 5th annual West Pullman Christmas Soiree shown here. Finish out 2025 by helping create a sense of home and community for others in Chicago. Make a tax-deductible gift to Habitat Chicago today: https://lnkd.in/giB-TuHn

  • “We’re all the same folks,” President Jimmy Carter once said. “We all want the same for our children — a better life, one that’s filled with excitement and challenge and hope and self-respect.” As Habitat for Humanity’s most famous volunteer, President Jimmy Carter worked tirelessly to make the world a better place, helping families build and repair homes and highlighting the tremendous global need for affordable shelter. Please join us in remembering him and celebrating the positive impact he had on so many. #HonoringCarter

Am I the only one replaying childhood memories of singing Alvin and the Chipmunks Christmas carols? I fondly remember singing their rendition of 12 days of Christmas while in the back seat of my Tito's Chevy oversized van, without a care of being out of tune because I couldn't be worse that the chipmunks on the track. I love this time of year for the holiday spirit and the intentional reflection. As the year comes to a close, I'm spending some time to reflect on the achievements of the Affordable Homeownership Program at Habitat for Humanity Chicago, the program participants, and everyone who helps make the program successful. As someone who works directly with program participants, ushering them through the process of our initial applications, creating individualized program participation plans, assists with both restrictive grant and downpayment assistance applications, it's easy to be in awe of how all the moving pieces comes together to unlock the dream of homeownership for Habitat Chicago's new homeowners. In the (easily recognizable) spirit of the holiday season, below is a list of some important shareable notes from the year: #1 - One of this year’s closings was made possible through the City of Chicago's City Lots for Working Families with Destiny Durham. We're excited to see the City of Chicago's homebuyer program expansion with Building Neighborhoods and Affordable Homes (BNAH) program soon to be available to some of our homebuyers next year. (Stay tuned for #2-#12)

  • “Being able to call a space your own space is very valuable,” reflects Unika, a Habitat Chicago homeowner. Unika set a goal to become a homeowner by the age of 30, and with her determination and our support, she achieved it. 💪 🏡 Homeownership should be within reach for everyone.
