As global leaders in sustainability, science, and policy convene at #INC5 to discuss the nuances of a #GlobalPlasticsTreaty, we urge them not to overlook the built environment - the #2 consuming-sector of plastics, behind packaging. Our recent policy brief provides the data decision-makers need to ensure the built environment is included in international plastic reduction efforts. As we gather to give thanks today, the Habitable team is reflecting on the wisdom that has always existed in how humans relate to our earth. We acknowledge the Indigenous peoples who have long understood and practiced the principles of circular economies and sustainable stewardship of resources--wisdom that guides our work today. 🌎 We're deeply grateful for the community that makes our mission possible: 👫 Dedicated staff who pour their creativity and passion into reimagining a healthier materials economy 💫 Visionary funders who believe in the possibility of transformation 🤝 Partners who collaborate with us in building new systems and solutions 💗 Families and loved ones who support us in this vital work Most importantly, we're thankful for the growing recognition that the health of our communities and our planet are inseparable. As we work to rebalance our relationship with materials and resources, we carry forward lessons from those who have long understood this fundamental connection. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃

Thank you Enterprise Community Partners for featuring Habitable's CEO Gina Ciganik as one of their Resilient 7. 👏 Read about Gina's story here: http://bit.ly/3Z3Hvzz #GreenBuilding #BuiltEnvironment #AffordableHousing #WomenLeaders
“We tend to be more concerned about lotions we put on our face, the food we put in our mouth, but not about the flooring we walk on, or that the dust coming off those products gets inside our bodies.” Gina Ciganik is a former affordable housing developer and now CEO of Habitable, where she’s leading a science-based effort to create a healthy built environment that’s better for people and the planet. Our conversation with Gina is the latest in our Resilient 7 series paying tribute to housing leaders building a more sustainable future. https://bit.ly/3Z3Hvzz

🌟 New letter in @science on plastics in the build environment, by me and Veena Singla. We emphasize that a sectoral approach to regulating plastics in the global #PlasticsTreaty must include plastics in buildings and construction. ➡ 17% of plastics were used in buildings and construction in 2019, a sector that is second only to packaging. ➡ This sector is the major user of #PVC, a polymer that is known to be toxic, both via toxic monomers, toxic additives, and release of toxicants throughout the entire life cycle from #extraction and #production to #waste. ➡ Toxic chemicals in plastic building materials contribute to exposure in the indoor environment. This affects marginalized and vulnerable populations more than others. ➡ There are already safer and more sustainable materials that can be used! Regulating chemicals in plastics is a #HumanRight issue affecting the right to a clean, health, sustainable environment, to development, to participation, access to information, and access to justice Read here: https://lnkd.in/dtBfhMA3
