About us

GCS is the third largest school district in North Carolina, serving nearly 70,000 students. The second largest employer in a 12-county area, GCS’ more than 10,000 full- and part-time employees enthusiastically share the district’s mission: to graduate responsible citizens prepared to succeed in higher education or the career of their choice. The district’s 127 schools, located in both urban and rural areas, include elementary schools serving grades K through 5, and in some instances, pre-K through 5. To the relief of working parents, after-school care is offered at many elementary schools throughout the county. The district also has middle schools (grades 6-8), high schools (grades 9-12), two special education schools (Gateway and McIver Education Centers), two SCALE sites, which provide an alternative to long-term suspensions, and Twilight School, which offers high school students a flexible schedule to complete graduation requirements. GCS offers parents and students a wide range of educational choices that are not usually found in public school systems, including 56 choice schools and programs. • #GCSWrapped | Lindsay Brake is a Curriculum Facilitator at Southern Middle and has spent all 22 years of her education career in Southern. Looking back on her time in Guilford County Schools, she is filled with memories of this community. "The principal of Allen Jay Middle (now Southern Guilford Middle) at the time, Mr. Ken Wheat, had faith in me as a new educator straight out of UNCG. I was excited to start teaching, little did I know that I would likely spend my entire educational career serving the Southern Guilford community." Brake has spent time teaching multiple grade levels, coaching athletic teams and once served as a literacy coach. She has witnessed the school undergo many transitions but understands that her job is greater than what happens just within the walls of Southern Middle. "In recent years, children of former students have been entering the halls of SG. It warms my heart to see these former students and that they have faith in Southern Middle, just as Mr. Wheat did in me, to nurture and grow their own kids. I always tell others that I am Southern Guilford’s biggest cheerleader." Thank you for your dedication to Southern, Guilford County Schools and our students. Lindsay Brake shows what it means to be #BetterTogether.

  • #GCSWrapped | Governor Roy Cooper proclaimed 2024 "The Year of Public Schools." While preparing to leave office, he and North Carolina State Superintendent-Elect Mo Green visited GCS to see the new Claxton Elementary, the first school opened from the historic bond. We appreciate Governor Cooper's steadfast advocacy and support for our educators and students over the last 8 years. 💙

  • #GCSCelebrates | There are many roles in our schools required to keep things running smoothly. From teachers to custodians, it takes the entire team to support our students and prepare them for the future. One such position that is often overlooked is that of the school treasurer. At High Point Central, that role belongs to Jodi Hughes, who has become a key component of the success of the school over the years. Hughes’ love for High Point Central goes beyond her job title, as her children, husband and his family all attended the school. She herself is a Guilford County Schools alum, having attended Southwest High in High Point. Hughes’ support for the High Point community and its learners is felt as she provides support to the school in a multitude of ways. This dedication is what earned her the nomination of Employee of the Month for December. Read more here: https://ow.ly/L39V50UjRhQ
