GreenFaith is building a worldwide, multi-faith climate and environmental movement.

About us

Our Mission: Because the Earth and all people are sacred and at risk, GreenFaith is building a worldwide, multi-faith climate and environmental movement. Together our members create communities to transform ourselves, our spiritual institutions, and society to protect the planet and create a compassionate, loving and just world. Our Vision: We envision a world transformed, in which humanity in all its diversity has developed a shared reverence for life on Earth. Religious and spiritual communities everywhere generate a moral awakening to the sacredness of Earth and the dignity of all people. Together, we are building resilient, caring communities and economies that meet everyone’s needs and protect the planet. The era of conquest, extraction, and exploitation has given way to cooperation and community. The good life is one of connectedness—with each other and all of nature. It is a world of flourishing life that replaces despair with joy, scarcity with shared abundance, and privilege with justly distributed power.

  • Pope Francis' recent call for decisive climate action during his visit to Indonesia serves as a compelling interfaith statement, underscoring the collective responsibility that goes beyond individual religious boundaries. By advocating for environmental stewardship in such a diverse and spiritually rich nation, the Pope highlights how protecting our planet is a universal moral imperative shared across faiths, with religious leaders at the helm of it. We call on our fellow faith leaders in Indonesia and around the world to double down on our commitment to environmental protection, not retreat from it. As we navigate the complex challenges of the modern world, may we all recommit to the principles of environmental stewardship that are deeply embedded in our faith traditions. We must hold our religious institutions accountable when they stray from these principles. And in the end, we must continue to be a prophetic voice for climate justice. #Faiths4Climate

Recently, President Widodo has amended Indonesia’s mining regulations to allow religious organisations to operate mining concessions. This decision raises serious concerns about the growing entanglement between faith, governance, and the exploitation of natural resources in the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation. As Imam Saffet Catovic and Hajj Fazlun Khalid state in their opinion piece, how can religious organisations continue to advocate for environmental protection while being complicit in activities that harm the Earth? #IslamAndNature #FaithInAction #GreenFaith #Stewardship

  • President Suluhu, governments have a moral duty to serve and protect people, not oppress them. We are profoundly concerned and steadfastly opposed to the escalating levels of harassment and intimidation to which our fellow people of faith are subjected for their peaceful, law-abiding opposition to the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline. No faith tolerates or condones violent, immoral harassment & intimidation of innocent people. As people of faith and conscience, we have a moral duty to protect the vulnerable. We call on the government of Tanzania, CNOOC International , and TotalEnergies to bring an immediate and complete end to this reprehensible treatment of innocent persons. Please join our call for justice & add your name to the open letter today: https://lnkd.in/eQhnWE-H #ifikiemamaSuluhu #StopEACOP

  • Great work by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, who are 100% correct to call out Citi for its cruel disregard for Indigenous rights routinely violated by fossil fuel extraction. Amen, Sisters! #faiths4climate

  • BREAKING: Ten of our GreenFaith Circle leaders in rural Tanzania were recently detained by police for three days. Their “crime”? They had met with Rev. Fletcher Harper, our Director, when he visited them in February to learn about their courageous work opposing the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline. Their detention was an act of harassment and intimidation. In the face of a climate emergency, this repression of free speech is a disgrace. It needs to stop. We have responded by supporting these courageous people of faith and securing their release. Now, we are mounting an international effort to tell the Tanzanian government, the Chinese National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), and TotalEnergies (the corporations behind the pipeline project) that we will not stand for this illegal, immoral behavior. • Check out this interview with Jean Pierre Ibucwa Lipanda, GreenFaith's RDC Organizer: "My prayer is that churches in the West join us in this effort by incorporating environmental protection into their Christian education programs, supporting conservation projects, eliminating racial barriers that add to environmental injustices, and advancing relief work that is rooted in sustainable development. Our work is a response to God’s love and salvation for the full community of creation. " Read the rest here:

  • Across the world, we are seeing unprecedented climate impacts and climate fueled storms, fires, droughts, and wars. Millions of people across the globe are being displaced and impacted. While the world is calling for an end to fossil fuels, a just transition to accessible, affordable, renewable energy for all, and for loss and damage for those most impacted, our governments are not doing nearly enough. As grassroots, multi-faith people of conscience from many different faith and spiritual traditions, we know this is wrong, and that it’s time to take action to call for the change we know is possible. That’s why, on 3-12 May, people of faith around the world will be mobilizing for a week of action calling for an end to fossil fuels, a sustainable future, and a fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty. Watch this page for updates on how you can get involved! #Faiths4Climate #NoFaithInFossils
