Happy Winter Solstice to our followers in the Northern Hemisphere! Today marks the first day of winter. The winter solstice is the day with the fewest hours of sunlight throughout the year, making it the "shortest day" of the year. After the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and longer until we reach the summer solstice - which is the first day of summer and the "longest day of the year". The word solstice comes from the Latin sol “sun,” and sistere “to stand still.” So, loosely translated, it means “sun stands still.” The Sun’s path across the sky appears to freeze for a few days before and after the solstice. The change in its noontime elevation is so slight that the Sun’s path seems to stay the same or stand still. #wintersolstice #winter #shortestday #solstice

Today is Revolution and Youth Day in Tunisia. The holiday is a commemoration of both the 'Jasmine Revolution' that saw a mass uprising force the banning president into exile and the hope and aspirations of the country's youth who played a pivotal role in the said revolution. It represents a profound change in Tunisian society and its political landscape. The social unrest that led to the revolution started after a young street vendor set himself on fire in protest against police corruption, thereby sparking a national movement for change. The revolution ended with the overthrow of President Ben Ali’s regime, making it a victory for the people and especially highlighting the power of the nation's youth. Revolution and Youth Day is typically marked by various activities across the country, from peaceful gatherings remembering the revolutionary period to concerts and cultural events celebrating Tunisia's youth. Schools, offices, and businesses are closed, and people come together to reflect on their country's journey towards a more democratic, equal, and just society. It's a day to honor the sacrifice made by many and celebrate the courage shown by the youth in their stand for democracy. #RevolutionandYouthDay #Tunisia #Holiday

English is a tricky language. The prefix "in" has two meanings: 1. not 2. an intensifier, as in "very" This means you end up with words like these, which can be confusing: incapable = not capable inflammable = flammable invaluable = very valuable So if you're learning English, give yourself some grace. Some of us native speakers have a hard time, too!

The Oxford University Press Word of the Year for 2024 is 'brain rot'. 'Brain rot' is defined as "the supposed deterioration of a person's mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as a result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) considered to be trivial or unchallenging". You know what won't give you brain rot? Taking language lessons 👀👀

It's St. Nicholas Day! Originating in Europe, it is now celebrated all over the world. The December 6 Feast of Saint Nicholas honors the Christian Bishop who had a reputation for secret gift-giving and generosity. The most common way to celebrate is to leave shoes (or stockings) out for St. Nicholas the night of December 5 to place small gifts in, which are found on the morning of December 6. Traditionally, the gifts are small candies and coins - little items that bring a lot of joy to children. How do you celebrate St. Nick's Day? #StNicksDay #StNick #FeastofSaintNicholas
