🎄🎅 Holidays stressing you out? Take a cue from a 🔋 and breathe 🫁 🎥 In this video from our summer intern Jinhong, we scanned a battery during a single charge-discharge cycle. Watch closely to see the battery “breathing” as the electrodes slide past each other. This swelling is even more dramatic in next-generation battery chemistries like silicon and lithium metal 👀 📏 We also measured the change in core area as a function of SOC. The core area almost recovers to its initial value, but not quite. 🫣 Mo’ swelling, mo’ problems 🫣 In the race 🏁 for higher energy density and lower cost, battery engineers 🔋🤓 are squeezing 🪗 in more active material into cells and adding high-swell materials such as silicon. Unfortunately 🚨, these tradeoffs can build up stress in the cell 😰 and induce issues such as jellyroll buckling 💔, which can cause internal shorting and even thermal runaway 🔥. 🩻 Our summer intern Jinhong CT scanned some 2170 cylindrical cells 🔋 periodically during a cycling test 🔄. Since batteries swell as they age, this buckling gets worse and worse with time ⏳. 🚀 We've just returned from #Huntsville for the #NASA Battery Workshop! 🚀 Glimpse is proud to count NASA as a customer of our industry-leading CT scanning technology for evaluating battery safety and reliability. At the conference, we shared a few of the projects that Glimpse and NASA are working together on. Special thanks to Samuel Russell, Eric Darcy, and the rest of the NASA battery crew for many insightful conversations around the need for high battery quality for aerospace applications. We also enjoyed learning more about "Rocket City" and the Space Race during our brief pit stop at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center!
