  • Farewell to Loren as today is her last day with Geek Girl Tech! Loren Brunner joined Geek Girl Tech back in 2017, helping Jenn with invoices and hiring. Since then, she's helped grow the company and has worked on numerous projects ranging from HR to Impact. She's spearheaded our B Corp certification, Women Owned Business Certification as well as our 1% for the Planet certification. Join me in congratulating Loren on her new role as Impact Manager at a fellow B Corp, Council Fire, and wish her well in her new role!

  • The FBI is urging everyone to only send encrypted messages in lieu of plain SMS based messages. What apps are currently encrypted: iMessage (only to other iPhone users) Signal (parent company is a non-profit foundation) WhatsApp (owned by Meta) Telegram (if you currently use this, make sure end-to-end encryption is turned ON.) Recently 8 telecommunications companies have been hacked by a Chinese group called "Salt Typhoon". Verizon and AT&T and T-Mobile are some of the company's that have been disclosed, while T-Mobile claims none of its customer data was stolen. From a US Senator Mark Warner, "This is the worst telecom hack in US history". Millions of Americans are affected. Watch the video below to learn more.

**** WARNING **** Earlier today I changed my setting to indicate that 'I was Open to Work'. Almost immediately after I received a number of messages from friends and colleagues wishing me luck, several messages from 'HR Specialists' , including some who had stumbled on my Profile (Must remember to put that away more tidily!). I also received two separate enquiries from someone calling themselves 'Order herry' and another from a 'Sophia' asking me if I would be interested in a job and to send my CV. I challenged Order herry to provide details of the role and after a number of further messages I challenged him again that he was in fact just a CV writer and there was no job. He agreed. The other contact, 'Sophia' went a stage further and sent me a list of the jobs "we are recruiting for. When I indicated which one I was interested we had a further exchange and and said she would send a copy of the job description. I waited and waited and nothing. About an hour ago I checked my messages again and both of these message threads had been removed with a message saying 'This message may contain unwanted or harmful content'. SO some advise, particularly to the younger and or less experiences Linkedin members. NEVER EVER share your cv/personal details to anyone who contacts you BEFORE you check them out on Linkedin (particularly if their profile says they are in the US or Canada). Look at their work record, if its blank then its almost certainly a bogus account. Genuine recruiters are ethical and will always look to talk to you for a particular role and almost without exception, provide details of the role they are recruiting for. DONT LET HACKERS STEAL YOUR DATA!

Today, on Trans Day of Remembrance (TDOR), we come together to honor the lives of transgender individuals who have been taken from us due to violence. This annual, international event began in 1999, founded by Gwendolyn Ann Smith to remember Rita Hester, a Black trans woman who was brutally murdered. Rita's death—and the countless others before and since—highlighted the urgent need to acknowledge and address the epidemic of violence against the trans community. TDOR is a day to mourn, but also a day to reflect on the systemic inequities and violence that disproportionately impact trans women of color. Racism, transphobia, and misogyny intersect to create a world where simply existing as a Black or Brown trans woman can put one in danger. Recognizing TDOR is important because visibility and remembrance are acts of resistance. They honor the humanity of those we've lost while calling us all to action to build a safer, more equitable world. Amid this grief, it’s the resilience of the trans community that inspires me and gives me hope every day. This community has endured so much and continues to rise, to create joy, art, advocacy, and love in the face of adversity. Our strength reminds me that a better future is possible—but only if we work together to make it so. I encourage everyone to take a moment today to learn about the history and meaning of TDOR. If you’re able, attend a vigil in your community to honor those who are no longer with us and to show your solidarity. Commit to being an active ally, standing with trans folx—especially Black, Indigenous, and other women of color—and working toward a world where no one has to fear for their life because of who they are. TDOR is internationally recognized and vigils are held around the globe, to find a vigil near you check with your local LGBTQ community groups in your area.
