Powerful words from Kareem Weaver to ground our work heading into the new year: “[Literacy] is the gateway to society, its institutions, and the basic opportunities that we want for all kids.” #Literacy is the fundamental #CivilRight of our time.

ICYMI watch this now: https://lnkd.in/g4WaC2MG "#ReadingRecovery is one-on-one instruction in the classroom for the lowest performing students in first grade struggling to read. School districts in Georgia and across the country used its teaching methods for decades. Once hailed as one of the most effective intervention models, a study published in the Journal of Research on Educational Effectiveness in 2023 raises questions about its effectiveness. While the results show the short-term impact to students 'largely positive,' researchers say the results completely flipped once the children reach third and fourth grade." #literacy #righttoread #readingreset

What a day! Thank you, Adrian Hammitte and Jefferson County School District, for showcasing successful practices in action and for demonstrating what it looks like to effectively prioritize literacy.
Exciting Collaborations for Literacy in Jefferson County! I am thrilled to share the incredible experiences we had today at Jefferson County School District. We were honored to host Kareem Weaver, Executive Director of FULCRUM, along with Program Director Devika Sood, who came to observe the Science of Reading in action at Jefferson County Elementary School. Their dedication to enhancing literacy outcomes for children resonates deeply with our mission to provide every student with the tools they need to succeed. We also welcomed Dr. Shannon Whitehead, Superintendent of Philadelphia School District, and her team, who took the opportunity to witness our innovative instructional practices firsthand. It was a powerful moment that highlighted our commitment to educational excellence. Mr. Weaver praised our dedicated teachers and leaders, recognizing the hard work that goes into creating a nurturing learning environment. We were grateful to have representatives from the NAACP, state department, law enforcement, juvenile justice system, and local pastors join us, further demonstrating our community’s unwavering support for our students. Literacy is not just a skill; it is the foundation for lifelong learning and success. Here in Jefferson County, we are passionate about building a culture of reading and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive. Thank you to everyone who is part of this journey. Together, we are making a significant impact on the lives of our children, and I am excited to see what the future holds! #LiteracyLeadership #JeffersonCounty #CommunitySupport #EducationExcellence

"Social justice really sits at the intersection of teaching and learning." Kareem Weaver has a special message for educators—teachers, principals, coaches—fighting for students and their #RightToRead: WE SEE YOU. This year, Kareem traveled to over 30 states, collaborated with 15 State Departments of Education, and worked relentlessly with the FULCRUM team to unite people across communities to drive change. In 2025, we aim to expand our reach even further, deepening our impact through a growing virtual community of practice, events for educator preparation programs, and state activations to directly support systems navigating change. This #GivingTuesday, join the global generosity movement and help us reach our goal of raising $100,000 before the end of the year. Your support will allow us to build momentum as we continue educating, inspiring, and connecting literacy leaders across the country. "What I saw belied the stereotype that this is a ‘back to basics’ drill-and-kill approach. Students were experiencing the joy of learning to read, whether it was TK students fascinated with their teacher’s phonemic awareness games, 2nd graders writing about their dreams, or 5th graders summarizing a story in chronological order." — Sam Davis, OUSD Board President Last month, local and state policymakers joined FULCRUM, Oakland Literacy Coalition, and EdVoice's California Early Literacy Coalition for #literacy learning walks in #Oakland. This was a valuable opportunity to showcase evidence-based literacy practices and effective implementation in action and highlight the real impact on student learning.
