It’s just 15 days until some very consequential elections. You’ve heard plenty about the Presidential election. One vote that’s getting less attention is the first elected school board in Chicago — ever. The members we will elect will have important decisions to make, and their effectiveness matters — for our students, and our city. The inaugural fellows of the Academy for Local Leadership have created a voter guide to help us all make informed choices about our selections for the Board of Education. We hope you find it useful, and that you’ll share it with your social, professional, and political networks — and anyone who cares about Chicago’s future. Today, Mayor Johnson appointed six interim candidates to the Chicago School Board. While he retains the authority to appoint members, this November marks a historic shift as Chicago residents will elect 10 of the 21 members for the first-ever Elected School Board. By 2027, the entire board will be elected. The ideal candidate should prioritize improving education, advancing equity, and engaging community voices. They must have experience with diverse communities, a deep understanding of CPS policies, and be committed to transparency and accountability, ensuring they listen to parents and support student success. As we approach this pivotal election, it's crucial that every Chicagoan participates. Electing thoughtful, dedicated school board members is a powerful step toward ensuring that our schools provide quality education and serve the needs of all students and families. Your vote will help shape the future of Chicago's public education!
