Meet Dr. Justin Otis DNP, APRN-CRNA 🙌 I never knew what a CRNA was until I was seven years into my nursing career. That all changed when I met several nurse anesthetists, which inspired me to pursue a career in anesthesia. I worked in the SICU through the challenges of COVID, earning valuable experience along the way. After three applications, I was finally accepted into CRNA school and began my journey toward anesthesia practice. During my first year, we read Watchful Care and History of Anesthesia, which deepened my appreciation for the history of nurse anesthesia. These books sparked a question in me: “Why are things still the same after over 150 years?” That curiosity led me to connect with influential leaders in Florida, such as Greg Buck and David Hidalgo, which marked the beginning of my advocacy journey. During my education, I had the opportunity to rotate at a facility owned and operated by independent CRNAs. Experiencing independent practice firsthand, I knew that was the career path I wanted to pursue after graduation. One of the best pieces of advice I received during my rotations was, “Independent practice isn’t necessarily a skill set, but more of a mindset.” I embraced that mindset, pushing myself in every clinical rotation, even when my practice was directed. In my final year, I reached out to every open independent practice position I could find, from Washington to Kansas, and was fortunate to accept a position in Kentucky. Now, as I approach my first anniversary as a CRNA, I am proud to practice independently and serve on the KyANA Board of Directors. I am deeply grateful to the countless CRNAs who invested in me throughout my three years of training. Their support has shaped me into the provider I am today. I remain committed to advancing our profession and delivering effective, efficient, and empathetic anesthesia care to every patient I serve.
