As 2024 comes to a close, it’s incredible to reflect on the rapid evolution of the energy landscape and the unprecedented growth in battery storage—nearly 10 GW of new capacity added in the U.S. this year alone (the equivalent of 10 full-size nuclear power plants)! AI continues to transform the grid, driving energy demand and unlocking new levels of performance in battery energy storage systems (BESS). At FlexGen, we started the year with a focus on harnessing AI’s potential, culminating in the launch of HybridOS V12 and innovations like predictive maintenance and our beta-tested ‘ROC Bot.’ (This tool helps our Remote Operations Center (ROC) operators detect, evaluate, and resolve issues 50% faster than the industry average, keeping batteries on and performing better than ever.) Here are just a few highlights from an incredible year: 🔋 Commissioning nearly 1 GW of battery storage capacity. From integrating DC batteries and AC systems at our Innovation Lab in North Carolina to commissioning them in the field and passing market qualification tests, we now support these systems with HybridOS software and Lifecycle Services for years to come. 💡 Delivering 98% industry-leading site availability. Third-party validation confirmed FlexGen’s performance far surpasses other top-tier providers at 93%. That 5% value gap is significant to our customers and to the stability of the grid. 🖥️ Advancing our AI-driven roadmap. With HybridOS V12, we enhanced energy management capabilities, launching tools that enable faster and smarter decision-making for battery optimization. 🤝 Building partnerships across the full BESS lifecycle. This year’s announcements include: • Partnering with Vitol subsidiary VC Renewables for 2 GWh of storage. • Partnering with Eos for 50 GWh of long-duration (8-hour), fully US-based solutions. • Launching FlexGen’s US-Based BMS (Battery Management System). • Releasing white papers like our Data Center report, exploring how 4-hour batteries solve data center interconnection challenges. • Upcoming announcements will include ~0.5 GW of storage in ERCOT, a Midwest renewal and expansion, new funding to strengthen partner confidence heading into 2025, and a variety of targeted solutions across the battery asset lifecycle. Data center energy use is expected to increase by 220% by 2030, in large part due to increased use of AI technologies. Despite the US desire for data center growth and innovative energy generation sources to meet the demand for computational services, development has slowed due to challenges related to the grid and meeting peak energy demand. Interconnection approvals for new data centers are bottlenecked because their energy footprints add too much strain on the grid during peak usage times. Utility-scale battery storage offers a game-changing solution. By charging during low-demand and discharging during peak demand periods, batteries reduce grid strain and accelerate interconnection approvals. Plus, battery storage offers the potential for new revenue streams through participation in ancillary service markets.
