In fire sprinkler systems, the proper application of dope and/or tape is critical to maintaining system integrity and ensuring reliability in a fire emergency.   Thread Sealant (Dope): Applied to the threads of fire sprinkler pipe and fittings, thread sealant, commonly known as "dope," creates a watertight connection that prevents leaks from occurring. Dope may not be suitable for PVC pipes due to chemical incompatibilities which can weaken the pipe.   Thread Tape (Teflon Tape): Often used alongside dope, Teflon tape is wrapped around the threads of pipe fittings to act as a lubricant and provide an additional sealing layer, ensuring a tight, leak-free connection. Teflon tape is especially effective in areas with high temperatures or corrosive substances due to its resistance to heat and chemicals. Additionally, tape also helps prevent galvanic corrosion and galling of threaded connections by acting as a barrier between dissimilar metals. Which Method To Use? Only tape  Only dope Tape first, then dope Dope first, then tape Dope, tape, then dope Tape, dope, then tape again... please don't actually do this ❌ .   Each method has its proponents, but the key in all methods is to ensure a reliable, leak-free connection to keep fire sprinkler systems functioning properly. Furthermore, always check the compatibility of the sealant before applying it to any threaded material.
