The ERA_FABRIC project is to define “interconnected knowledge space” foreseen by EU ERA Hubs initative.

About us

Overarching aim of the ERA_FABRIC project is to define, structure, populate and validate the “interconnected knowledge space” foreseen by the EU ERA Hubs initative (COM 2020 628 final 2 ). Underlying challenges: We understand, and adopt as a structuring principle for the community to be built and cultvated during the project, that a new “ interconnected knowledge space ” will be created by the EU ERA Hubs initatve, having three distnct, and intertwined, dimensions, all of them relevant for policy making: 1) ERA Hubs as Knowledge Ecosystems : fostering the dynamic interaction of R&D and innovation actors at regional and multiregional levels, taking into account the different knowledge and cultural contexts and the alignment of research foci and industrial needs; 2) ERA Hubs as Multi Stakeholder Platforms : bringing together the representatives of the various involved interest groups in a seamless and uninterrupted discussion and deliberation on strategic priorities, actions and results evaluation; 3) ERA Hubs as a Policy Co Creation Toolbox : a transformative set of measures and tools operating in a “ middle ground ” needing to be configured as a distinct space from both the EU and the MS/Regional levels, historically presided over by “ad hoc” sets of instruments (e.g. Framework Programmes for R&I, Structural and Investment Funds, Interregional and Cross Border Cooperation Programmes). It is the consortium’s vision and assumption that the 3 above dimensions should be presided over and made interoperable, in order for the ERA Hubs initiative to become path breaking and impactiul at broad EU level.

📢 Recap of our today workshop: 'Deepening the human centricity of R&D and innovation policies'! 📝Methods could help us engage local communities more effectively in defining priorities and objectives for R&D policies and projects ✏️Participatory workshops, working groups, task forces, etc.: 📌ownership of problem 📌selection bias (polarized, most enthusiastic / angry) 📌methodologies: e.g. Design Thinking ✏️Living Labs: citizen can test solutions and co-shape ✏️Gamification: mutual learning – not competition ✏️Participatory Budgeting in Cities: local open calls for projects of citizens ✏️Early stage involvement of innovators in calls: Companies asked to provide abstract of research project before opening a public call for proposal ✏️Associations of citizens 📝What can we do to help innovators focus more on community needs? ✏️Improve diagnosis: involve civil society representatives from the beginning 📌better understand needs ✏️Public-private Solution Development: Innovation Procurement ✏️Collaboration with Vocational Education Training entities to develop training programs ✏️Local incubation programs / local hackathons to answer local problems (smart city or health solutions) ✏️Crowdsourcing calls for small scale R&D projects addressing local needs, e.g. on air quality ✏️Communication: Language Training for innovators how to speak with citizens ✏️Universities: listen and share, knowledge sharing instead of transfer 📝How can we ensure that we communicate the results and benefits of innovation policies and projects to citizens? ✏️Use right language! Story telling: share success stories through „neighbourhood testimonials“ having benefited. ✏️Coaching for researchers / PhD students on story telling: impact for society ✏️Provide different layers of complexity: 📌researchers: data sets; citizens: visualization, info graphics -> test with different stakeholder groups (citizens, journalists, etc.) -> role for intermediaries ✏️Local community events/festival, also cultural events, night of researchers ✏️Collaboration with regional media ✏️Communication with kids: Book for kids, researchers at schools ✏️Students as ambassadors 📝What kinds of metrics would help us track the impact of our R&D projects on local communities and ensure they align with human-centric goals? How can we make citizens provide these metrics? ✏️Incentives for citizens to provide data (example: % reduction of energy costs) ✏️Currently often only collect KPI –> needed: also qualitative info, long-term satisfaction ✏️Narratives together with metrics: narrative needed to convey the message/data Thank you to All participants for their contribution!
