Linda Lockwood, RN, MBA has a unique perspective by being able to survey the broader market through AVIA and aggregate different approaches to define the winning “MIX” for #virtualnursing. Often times we feel we need to “re-pilot” what’s been proven which can impact time to implementation and also can bring in ineffective strategies - “run don’t walk” to virtual nursing!

Virtual nursing programs typically launch at a few sites within a larger health system. Leadership wants to see demonstrated success at these pilot locations before expanding further. So, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months later, how do you know if the program’s working? What are a few KPIs to track? Or, taking a step back, how do you decide what to measure in the first place? Linda Lockwood, RN, MBA (Senior Advisor, AVIA Health) led a mini-workshop on this topic during our recent Virtual Nursing webinar, in tandem with Equum Medical. Linda recommends starting first with the big picture: What is the problem we’re trying to solve? Common example in virtual nursing: Taking stress off the bedside nurse. Now you can drill further: What are those tasks adding extra stress? How long do they take? For instance: How much time is the bedside nurse spending in the EHR? How much time is spent on admissions and discharge? With the help of your nursing informaticists and analysts, teams can create these reports. Linda emphasized how important it is to take baseline measures in areas like: 1. Nursing retention  2. Mentoring, supporting staff 3. Experience/skill complexity gap  4. Overtime spend  5. Spend via outside agencies  6. Patient experience scores The more specific the better. Metrics like “Length of stay” or “Readmissions” are harder to pin on just one factor like virtual nursing. With baseline measures in place, a clear set of KPIs, and an overarching goal, health systems can better evaluate outcomes at their virtual nursing locations and compare against locations without virtual nursing. Putting the data behind the success stories empowers health systems to build on what’s working and further invest in their program’s success. #nursing #bedsidenurses #virtualnursing #digitalcaretransformation

  • The State of Care: A Call for Action in 2025 The healthcare industry continues to face challenges in access to care, as critical staffing shortages are experienced across the nation, and nearly 1 in 5 nurses have left the profession in the past two years. In addition to staffing shortages, hospitals are struggling with higher acuity patients driving longer lengths of stay, impacting ED wait times, sentinel events, and hospital operating margin. At Equum Medical, we understand that the future of healthcare requires bold solutions. We’re focused on optimizing telehealth services to help alleviate these issues. With acute telehealth-enabled workforce and clinical services, we’re not just addressing staffing gaps – we’re creating scalable, sustainable solutions to improve care access, reduce patient wait times, and streamline operations. As you plan your hospital’s 2025 investment priorities, have you considered your telehealth services partner? Investing in the right partner can help de-risk technology implementation and ensure your hospital stays ahead of these critical challenges. Let’s work together to create more equitable, efficient healthcare in the years to come. #EquumMedical #Telehealth #HealthcareInnovation #StaffingShortages #PatientCare #HospitalSolutions #Healthcare2025

At Equum Medical, we know that the success of a virtual nursing program often hinges on one small but critical factor: the introduction to patients. As Sarah Bell, RN, MSN, MHA, Chief Clinical Officer at OutcomesAI shared during our recent webinar with eVisit, patient reactions to virtual nursing largely depend on how it’s presented by the in-person care team. Sarah highlighted the difference between a bedside nurse introducing virtual care with uncertainty versus one who confidently presents it as a seamless extension of the care they’re already receiving. “We see a big difference when the bedside nurse introduces the virtual nurse as a valuable part of the team, rather than something ‘new’ or ‘strange,’” Sarah explained. “When patients hear this as part of the care routine, they are much more likely to embrace it.” Kristen Lawton, Chief Nursing Officer at Equum Medical, echoed this sentiment, noting that many hospitals go even further by incorporating virtual nursing into their culture—through welcome letters, “Ask Me About Virtual Nurse” buttons, or other creative touchpoints. These efforts demonstrate to patients that virtual nursing is not an afterthought, but a thoughtfully integrated part of their care experience. As you evaluate and implement your virtual nursing solutions, don’t overlook the power of a simple, positive introduction—it could be the key to ensuring success for both your patients and your team.

For all the time spent evaluating new technology, and building a business case, and launching a successful implementation, there's one small detail that receives little attention but can absolutely make or break the patient's experience of virtual nursing. Simply put: How are your in-person nurses introducing the virtual nursing program to your patients? Sarah Bell, RN, MSN, MHA is the Chief Clinical Officer at OutcomesAI and was formerly at Mayo Clinic from 2005 to 2023 where she spearheaded the eICU initiative and established the organization’s first Virtual RN program. During our webinar with Equum Medical, Sarah contrasted two different ways a virtual nursing program might be presented. “Our patients react to virtual nursing according to how their bedside care team feels. If the nurse comes in and says, “Hi, I’m your nurse today, and we’re doing this weird thing, it’s called virtual nursing. I know… It’s on this camera; it’s gonna feel weird.” The patient will mirror this negative sentiment. “But If the bedside nurse walks in and says, ‘Hey, I’m Sarah, I’m your nurse today, and I have this great colleague of mine, Kristen, she’ll be on the camera today, she’s our virtual nurse, she’s gonna help me out,’ the patient’s gonna be like great, this is fantastic.” Sarah mentioned that scripting an introduction can help get this right. Kristen Lawton (Chief Nursing Officer at Equum Medical) agreed, adding that she’s seen hospitals have “Ask me about our Virtual Nurse” buttons, or they’ll introduce the virtual clinician in a welcome letter, or find other creative ways to show that virtual nursing is part of their system’s culture of care.  #virtualnursing #virtualnursingtechnology #digitalcaretransformation #healthsystems #patientexperience
