In Northeast Texas, a transformative initiative is helping change how cities, counties, communities, and the traditional health system approach health and well-being. Greater Longview Optimal Wellness (GLOW) is helping Longview residents get the non-medical resources they need —things like transportation, food, medications, and so much more. How does it work? Too often, 911 becomes the default lifeline for non-emergency needs, stretching first responders thin and leaving underlying issues unresolved. The GLOW program bridges that gap. By performing needs assessments and coordinating with a coalition of eight entities—city, county, United Way, hospitals, and mental health services—GLOW ensures that repeat 911 users are connected to the right support systems. THIS is improving #HealthNotJustHealthCare in NE Texas! EHF is proud to support GLOW as part of the Texas Accountable Communities for Health Initiative. What can happen when the health system addresses medical issues with non-medical solutions? #HealthNotJustHealthCare magic! A new study published in JAMA Network Open shows how simple, empathy-driven phone calls made by trained community members can significantly improve blood sugar control for low-income adults with #diabetes. “By offering genuine, empathetic support, we had an impact on health that’s the clinical equivalent to taking medicine," says Dell Med's Maninder Kahlon. "That’s because emotional well-being is the gateway to the lifestyle changes that improve management of the condition — an area where traditional health care often falls short.” Episcopal Health Foundation is proud to support this groundbreaking research from Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin and Lone Star Circle of Care that highlights the power of human connection in achieving health outcomes. Learn more about the findings that show how compassion by community health workers and others can be just as integral to health care as clinical expertise: https://lnkd.in/gpJD48Bd #FactorHealth #SDOH #NMDOH #HealthEquity #philanthropy

As demand for these services grows, workforce shortages, funding gaps, and financial instability are threatening their existence. Right now, there are less that two weeks remaining in the open enrollment period for Affordable Care Act (#ACA) health insurance. Affordable health insurance access can be life-changing, but navigating the system is challenging for many Texans. That’s why EHF supports grantees like Foundation Communities in Austin and Central Texas. Their Health Coverage program enrolls under-served community members in ACA health insurance -- plus programs like Medicaid and CHIP. Part of the program includes an expanded focus on building enrollment capacity in #rural areas. This effort features certified navigators who offer free, unbiased support, and simplify the complexities of enrolling in ACA plans—ensuring Texans can access doctors, medications, and essential preventive care. Transforming community health starts with supporting local organizations like Foundation Communities to make affordable health insurance coverage accessible for all.
