The 7th Graders at Straughn Middle School in Andalusia, AL have been Showing Their Purple Power all semester long! These students took it upon themselves to not only advocate, but also learn about epilepsy so they could better care for one of their friends and classmates. As part of their Liberty Learning Program assignment they researched about epilepsy, took a Seizure First Aid READY Course, designed their own shirts to raise money for research and presented all of their work at the County EXPO this past week. What started as a project has now turned into a town's desire to raise awareness and advocate for the 1 in 26! November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month (NEAM), and the Epilepsy Genomics Clinic at UAB Medicine is reimagining how to treat epilepsy in adults with an innovative approach. Physicians Advisory Board Member Ashley Thomas, M.D., director of the clinic and associate professor in the Department of Neurology, and Elizabeth Rothrock, M.S., LCGC, genetic counselor of the clinic and in the Department of Genetics, started the clinic roughly five years ago, and it has expanded since. Last week on Tuesday, November 12, the City of Trussville issued a Proclamation declaring November as Epilepsy Awareness Month! In attendance were board members Sula Gillespie and Julie Rowe, who also serve as Board Members, their families, Trussville families affected by epilepsy, and Executive Director Jeremiah Stone.
