#ICYMI: NSF, in partnership with The Lemelson Foundation, announced funding to support five teams whose projects are designed to generate new models for responsible engineering education. The teams will help equip the next generation of engineers with the knowledge and skills to lead sustainable innovations across manufacturing and emerging industries of the future. "These projects from the NSF-Lemelson initiative will help prepare engineering students to consider sustainability as they address complex challenges for our nation's industry, infrastructure and health," said Susan Margulies, NSF assistant director for Engineering. On this last #FrameworkFriday of the year, we’re showcasing Dustyn Roberts PE, PhD, a Practice Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, who is an Engineering for One Planet (EOP) Signatory and EOP Network member. She was among the second cohort of the ASEE Engineering for One Planet Mini-Grants Program (EOP-MGP), where she used the EOP Framework to integrate sustainability learning outcomes into two courses — an existing introduction to mechanical design class and then into a new, higher-level course focused on bicycle engineering and advocacy. This innovative curriculum combines bicycle design, engineering, and service learning to better understand the impact of bicycles on society and the environment, and expands students’ global outlook by traveling to The Netherlands for comparative examples. Dr. Roberts’ work has also helped engineering students engage more widely within their own community. One collaborative program, the Smoothie Bike Project, combines engineering with health and well-being by repurposing used bikes and blenders into kid-powered, smoothie-making machines. As the year comes to a close, we wanted to use this #FrameworkFriday to showcase the free, open-source, community co-created resources that Engineering for One Planet (EOP) has produced to help faculty incorporate environmental and social sustainability into engineering education. Here’s a rundown of resources to keep in mind for the coming semester: ✅ EOP Framework - the cornerstone of the EOP initiative that provides faculty with a vetted menu of competencies in the form of student learning outcomes mapped to ABET student outcomes ✅ EOP Framework: Comprehensive Guide to Teaching Core Learning Outcomes - a companion teaching resource to the EOP Framework with guidance on how to implement all of the core learning outcomes outlined in the Framework  ✅ EOP Framework: 13 Step-by-Step Ideas for Integrating Sustainability into Core Engineering Courses - provides specific curricular examples created by engineering faculty for each of the nine topic areas in the EOP Framework ✅ EOP Framework: Quickstart Activity Guide - an easy-to-use resource to help educators jump-start their use of the EOP Framework by providing teaching materials for one core learning outcome from each of the Framework topic areas  ✅ EOP Framework: Sustainability-focused Learning Outcomes for Engineering Education with AHEP4 Mapping - designed specifically for the needs of UK educators by aligning the EOP Framework with the fourth edition of the Accreditation of Higher Education Programmes (AHEP4) at the Chartered Engineer (CEng) level ✅ Pilot Grantee Synopsis - an overview of the lessons learned during the two-year EOP Pilot Grant Program to vet the EOP Framework, highlighting key approaches used by three of the five pilot schools ✅ EOP: A Strategic Roadmap - identifies lessons learned and strategies for advancing the EOP initiative nationally, and key levers of change within higher education institutions Have you used any of these resources? This #FrameworkFriday, we’re showcasing Erick C. Jones Jr., an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), and an Engineering for One Planet (EOP) Signatory. Dr. Jones teaches Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering at UTA, and runs the  Sustainable and Equitable Allocation of Resources (SEAR) Lab. The SEAR Lab focuses on modeling and developing technologies for the clean energy transition, the built environment, and supply chains, with an eye toward sustainability, equity, and resilience. He was inspired to pursue sustainability research by his global travels to under-resourced communities, and dedicated his work to enhancing quality of life by improving access to sustainable resources, infrastructure, and economic opportunities. He was among the first cohort of the ASEE Engineering for One Planet Mini-Grants Program (EOP-MGP), where he used the EOP Framework to integrate sustainability into a core engineering class at UTA as a proof of concept for all engineering courses. We were excited to see that fostering sustainability mindsets in engineering was a key recommendation in the recently released 2024 Industry Forum Report exploring the future of engineering education. The report summarized the findings of the 2024 Global Engineering Deans Council (GEDC) Industry Forum, organized in partnership with the IFEES - International Federation of Engineering Education Societies. Attendees had gathered earlier in the year at Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, China, to help shape the development of socially-conscious engineering education. The Industry Forum’s keynote presentation by Professor Shih Choon Fong focused on the need to prioritize sustainability in engineering, with calls to action for deans, industry leaders, NGOs, and academia to help make it a reality. The report recommends that sustainability be embedded throughout engineering programs and courses as a core element rather than as standalone modules, something that the Engineering for One Planet (EOP) Framework is designed to facilitate.
