CREA is an independent research organisation revealing the trends, causes, health impacts and solutions to air pollution
About us
We are an independent research organisation focused on revealing the trends, causes, and health impacts, as well as the solutions to air pollution. Health-harming pollutants from burning fossil fuels are responsible for at least 3 million air pollution deaths per year. However, rapid advances in modern, clean energy technologies are a key opportunity to improve air quality and protect public health. We use scientific data, research and evidence to support the efforts of governments, companies and campaigning organizations worldwide in their efforts to move towards clean energy and clean air. We believe that effective research and communication are the key to successful policies, investment decisions and advocacy efforts.

📰 🇮🇳 India’s novel attempts at battling deadly air pollution are falling short ⚠️ A key measure of air pollution reached a level more than 100x higher than the limits the World Health Organization considers safe on 18 Nov, according to CREA data. The Commission for Air Quality Management said the agency has focused on reducing pollution at the source, e.g. encouraging farmers to reduce stubble burning by subsidizing the cost of machines that will mulch straw instead of burning it, requiring industries to switch to cleaner sources of fuel, and taking old cars off the street. 🇮🇩 NEW | Report: Indonesia iron and steel's full potential hinges on low-carbon technologies. 🏭Investments (domestic & foreign) in Indonesia's basic metal industries rose 2.5-fold from USD 14.8B in 2020 to 37.7B in 2023. ⚠️ But most are going to projects using emissions-intensive blast furnaces (BF) for ironmaking and basic oxygen furnaces (BOF) for steel making. 80% of Indonesia’s steel industries still rely on these BF-BOF processes. 🌱Accelerating low-carbon production routes like Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) and Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), and discouraging new BF-BOF capacities, would ensure Indonesia’s domestic industry remains competitive and align industrial growth with national planning. ⚠️Global Energy Monitor quotes an estimated USD 17 to 26B of stranded asset risk from the BOF steelmaking capacity under development in Indonesia. 🏛️Strategic interventions by policymakers and national stakeholders would signal investors to shift their decisions, positioning the industry for both long-term competitiveness and sustainability, while avoiding lock-in risks. 🗓️ This week marks CREA's 5-year anniversary! 🌿 As an independent research centre focused on the energy transition - from devastating fossil fuels to clean energy & clean air - CREA's experts have been busy 🔎 CREA's Lead Analyst Lauri Myllyvirta breaks down the last few months👇 #CleanEnergy #CleanAir #EnergyTransition
co-founder, Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air; senior fellow, Asia Society Policy Institute: tracking and advancing the clean energy transition, with data and evidence
India's top environmental court took action on our report on air pollution from coal power plants! My colleagues at Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) published a detailed emission inventory of India's coal power plants, showing the staggering volume of emissions and high emissions intensity. Despite the fact that India's coal power plants are among the most polluting in the world, there has been a failure to enforce emission limits and require the plants to install basic emission control devices routinely required in most other countries. Now there is a push from the coal industry to do away with the emission limits for SO2 wholesale. SO2 is the most dangerous pollutant from coal power plants and the one that contributes most to India's smog problem - SO2 turns into particulate pollution in the atmosphere. The court has required more information from central and state regulators on the emissions from coal power plants which could form the basis for requiring stronger action. 🇪🇺 This week, the EU's 15th sanctions package on Russia was agreed by the EU Council & European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen 🚨Yet, it does not address: ❗️Russian gas: EU flow up 24% between Jan. & Nov. 2024 vs. 2023 ❗️Czechia exemption: Companies import est. USD 48 mn of oil products per month into EU ❗️Shadow tankers: 2 with history of spills not listed 🔎 Read more from CREA Europe-Russia Policy & Energy Analyst Isaac Levi 👇 #CleanEnergy #CleanAir #EU #EuropeanUnion #FinancingPutinsWar #FossilFuels #Russia #15thSanctionsPackage #Sanctions #SanctionsPackage #ShadowTankers #StandWithUkraine #Ukraine
I coordinate & undertake analysis on Russia's fossil fuel flows & sanctions to prohibit Putin's ability to fund the war
✍ This week, the EU 15th sanctions package against Russia has finally been agreed upon! 📈 Even after fifteen rounds of sanctions on Russia, no measures have been implemented on gas that flows freely into the bloc at increasing quantities: the EU has imported 24% higher volumes between January and November 2024 compared to the same period last year. ⛽ The package also extends the exemption provided to Czechia to allow companies to continue importing an average of USD 48 million worth of oil products made from Russian crude oil into Slovakia every month, which is both shocking and unnecessary. 🚢 Regarding positive steps, the EU has added 52 Russian ‘shadow’ tankers to the sanctions list. These environmentally dangerous vessels have insufficient insurance that risks astronomical costs to coastal states in the event of an oil spill whilst they finance Putin’s military budget. An oil spill from a ‘shadow’ tanker could cost coastal states USD 1.6 billion. ☣️The two ‘shadow’ tankers identified as having spilled oil in a previous investigation have apparently not been added to the EU’s sanction list — this is insufficient and sends the message that illegal maritime practices will not be punished thereby encouraging these practices to continue. 💪 CREA’s analysis suggests that ‘shadow’ tankers sanctioned by the EU have loaded 82% less oil in the four months following the sanctions. Similarly, the volume of oil unloaded by these tankers has decreased by 71% since the sanctions were enforced. The average number of voyages made by these sanctioned vessels has fallen by 85% in the four months since the sanctions. These numbers signal that monitoring, enforcement and penalties bring results and more must be done. 😡 Regarding the Czechia exemption: why has Czechia been allowed to keep buying oil products made from Russian crude in Slovakia after stating that it does not need them? 🩸The Czech Ministry told Reuters they “do not see a reason why the exemption should be extended”. Czechia can survive without the direct import of Russian crude via the Druzhba pipeline or from buying oil products made from Russian crude in neighbouring states, it is therefore a huge hypocrisy that the exemption has been extended which will boost Russia's oil sales further. CREA’s previous analysis shows that Czechia has sent five times more money to Russia for the purchase of their fossil fuels than aid sent to Ukraine. Please see the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) and Center for the Study of Democracy publication on Czechia’s imports of Russian fossil fuels below: ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gcURzEaQ
