POV: A hungry sea urchin on the southern Oregon coast 🌿 looking for kelp stalks to munch upon... In the absence of natural predators like sea otters and sunflower sea stars, purple sea urchins can reproduce rapidly, overwhelming kelp forests by devouring their holdfasts (the structures anchoring kelp to the seafloor). This unchecked grazing leads to “urchin barrens,” vast underwater deserts where kelp forests once thrived. These barrens are inhospitable to many marine species, causing cascading effects throughout the ecosystem and jeopardizing biodiversity, fisheries, and coastal economies. 📸: Brandon Cole | #seaotters #kelp #KelpForest #seaurchins #Oregon #oregoncoast #climatechange #pnw

🙌 This December, the Spirit Mountain Community Fund (SMCF) reached an incredible milestone, surpassing $100 million in grants to Oregon nonprofits and Tribes over its 27-year history. To celebrate this historic achievement, SMCF hosted a special luncheon and check presentation on December 6 at Spirit Mountain Casino, honoring the impactful work of their nonprofit partners. The SMCF Board of Trustees honored six nonprofit organizations for their outstanding contributions to their communities. Each organization received a $5,000 gift in recognition of their commitment to improving the lives of people in northwest Oregon. The Elakha Alliance is deeply honored to have been selected as one of these six nonprofits and thrilled to be featured in their spotlight video 🦦! #seaotters #Oregon #oregoncoast #nonprofit #wildlife #Indigenous Jane Bacchieri Chanel Hason

Sea otters are making headlines again 🦦 🦀 ! Their appetite for the invasive green crab is helping control this problematic species in Elkhorn Slough (CA), boosting estuary health. Once nearly extinct, these keystone predators are now thriving, balancing ecosystems by curbing green crab populations that threaten native species. It's a win-win for conservation and estuary management. #seaotters #california #research #marinescience #estuary #seaotter #keystonespecies
