Today marks an important milestone in the treatment of advanced NSCLC with common EGFR mutations. The European Medicines Agency has approved the first chemo-free combination therapy—amivantamab and lazertinib—as a first-line treatment for patients with advanced o metastatic NSCLC harboring common EGFR mutations (exon 19 deletions or exon 21 L858R mutations). This decision is not just about introducing a new therapy; it’s about fundamentally rethinking how we approach care for patients. While we await the results on overall survival, which will further define and potentially qualify the robustness of this benefit, this new regimen brings a breath of innovation and progress, offering a significant opportunity for patients and their families.  This approval confirms the dedication and expertise of our entire IEO team in developing this combination through the MARIPOSA study in favor of our patients. Experts say self-referral for lung cancer tests would be a step in the right direction. https://lnkd.in/e-aqRyKT A third of our EGFR+ community saw their GPs multiple times before being diagnosed, often because their symptoms didn’t match the usual expectations and they didn’t fit the stereotypes for lung cancer. ctDNA is already being used to spot resistance mutations like T790M in EGFR+ lung cancer. New research is now looking at a bigger possibility: using ctDNA not just to find mutations, but to track whether treatments are working in real-time—similar to how scans are used today. Why does this matter? → Faster answers: Know sooner if a treatment is working. → Earlier action: Switch therapies quickly if needed. → Less invasive: Blood tests instead of repeated biopsies or scans. Our patient-led Facebook group for people affected by EGFR+ lung cancer has just reached 900 members! 💜 It’s a private, supportive space for those with EGFR+, their families, and loved ones. EGFR+ UK was founded by Kathy and Jenny. They created this community on the belief that no one should face this journey alone. Today, the group continues to provide a safe space where members can: → Share experiences → Ask questions without judgment → Connect with others who truly understand One member says: “Being part of EGFR+ UK has helped me to get back the confidence that my cancer diagnosis took away. Liz Baker is joining EGFR+ UK as a trustee, and we couldn’t be more pleased to welcome her expertise and lived experience to our team. Her background in lung health and tackling health inequalities, combined with her own journey with EGFR-positive lung cancer, makes her an invaluable addition. Liz was diagnosed with stage 2b EGFR+ in 2022 during routine surveillance for another condition. A non-smoker with no symptoms, the news was completely unexpected. Since then, she’s had a lobectomy, chemotherapy, and is now on Osimertinib. She came across our support group while looking for information and found much more than she expected. “The resources have been invaluable, but it’s the emotional support from others that’s really helped me learn to live and thrive with this diagnosis,” Liz says. With 27 years as an NHS nurse, followed by a career in teaching and healthcare research, Liz has focused on lung health, health promotion, and reducing inequalities. Liz is keen to use her skills and experience to support others living with EGFR+, and we’re so glad to have her on board!
