Progress on small modular #nuclear reactors (SMRs) is slow, with private capital largely sitting on the sidelines. SMRs aren’t seen as bankable investments yet—mainly due to a lack of demand signals and project sponsors. 💡 To unlock #SMR potential, significant private investment is needed for construction, fuel supply chains, and workforce development. But first, key investment risks must be addressed to make SMR orderbooks financially viable. In EFI Foundation's latest report, “Making Small Modular Reactors Bankable," actionable policy solutions are outlined to break down barriers and help form investment-grade orderbooks for SMRs in the United States. 🗞️ Great new report about carbon removal pathways from the EFI Foundation by Ernest J. Moniz, Joe Hezir, Deborah D. Stine, and Tatiana Bruce da Silva, Ph.D., "Innovation at the Horizon." 🔦 The paper profiles the technologies, policies, and research advancing hybrid carbon removal - and features several companies in Microsoft's removal offtake portfolio, Carbonfuture, Ebb Carbon, Eion Carbon, Lithos Carbon, Arbor Energy, among others. 🤔 We take a portfolio approach in our CDR purchases, and the report shows the benefits of this focus in balancing cost, timeline, and scale parameters in carbon removal development. EFI Foundation hydrogen expert Sarah Frances Smith joined Jannine Miller of Georgia Department of Transportation and Scott McWhorter of Southeast Hydrogen Energy Alliance last week at the Clean Cities-Georgia Hydrogen Summit to discuss strategies to build demand support and market readiness for the adoption of clean hydrogen in the United States. Creating the demand support mechanisms needed to support first mover hydrogen projects is essential for building a low-carbon economy, and will create the liftoff needed to build self-sustaining hydrogen markets. Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology has advanced considerably over the past decade. In the latest EFI Foundation report, our authors outline some of the most promising CDR innovation pathways across the United States. CDR has shown potential for addressing the adverse impacts of climate change, especially when deployed alongside efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. https://lnkd.in/eTrVAP4Q Mobilizing a combination of public and private sector investment can lead the way to significant breakthroughs. The power of hybrid CDR rests in its combination of cutting-edge technology with natural capacities like forest growth🌳and cover cropping🌾to reduce carbon dioxide accumulation. To support the report, EFIF published an additional study on how to incentivize development of direct air capture (DAC) through private and public sector support, which would facilitate commercialization and pave the way for significant growth in one of the core components of effective CDR. https://lnkd.in/ef6YaRDV #CDR #DAC #CarbonRemoval #DirectAirCapture

Yesterday, EFI Foundation CEO Ernest J. Moniz joined the Institute of Politics at University of Chicago and the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) for a discussion on how the private sector and incoming administration can foster technological innovation. "We are heading to a low carbon future," Moniz said. "The pace and scale remain to be determined." The deployment of low-carbon energy technologies is front and center at #COP29, but costs remain a concern and such technologies are still seen as relatively high-risk investments. EFI Foundation was on the ground in Baku, engaging in discussions to change that narrative. ⚛️ Last week in Baku, EFI Foundation's Senior Vice President for Strategic Initiatives Stephen Comello joined the U.N. SDG Pavilion for a panel discussion with Clean Air Task Force's Larissa Lee Beck and Nuclear Threat Initiative's Scott Roecker, featuring opening remarks from Italy's Special Envoy for Climate Change, Francesco Corvaro; World Nuclear Association's Sama Bilbao y Leon; and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)'s Wei HUANG. During the conversation, experts discussed innovative financing and risk-sharing strategies for small modular reactors (#SMRs). → Watch the panel here: https://lnkd.in/dAkwTZUn ♻️ Building on the need for investment in low-carbon technologies, Comello also joined Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy and Athens Riviera Forum for a discussion exploring pathways to finance a climate-resilient economy. Panelists included EBRD's Harry Boyd-Carpenter, European Central Bank's Irene Heemskerk, LATSCO Family Office S.A.'s Nikolas Voutychtis, and Sirec Energy S.A.'s Dionissis Alissandratos, moderated by Antigoni Lymperopoulou. →Watch the panel here: https://lnkd.in/dWTdMYmk Learn more about these timely conversations at this year's climate conference below. ⬇️
