As the demand for apprenticeships and work-based learning opportunities grows, one major hurdle holds back expanding these programs: hesitancy over cost 💵 “The apprentices on the one hand are costing money because they don’t know everything yet, and they’re having to be mentored,” said Robert Lerman, chair of Apprenticeships for America. “But on the other hand, they’re doing things you’d have to pay somebody else to do anyway. So if employers do it right, they can recoup a lot of their investment pretty fast.” The ROI is clear: ✅ 94% of apprentices stay with their employers after completing their programs (U.S. Department of Labor). ✅ Employers realize an average return of $1.44 for every dollar invested in apprenticeships (Urban Institute). At Education at Work, we see this ROI firsthand. E@W student workers have up to 90% one-year post-grad retention rates when hired by our partners. Apprenticeships and work-based learning are not only essential for closing skills gaps across the country, but also offer a high return on investment for employers. The question isn’t whether we can afford to scale work-based learning — it’s whether we can afford not to. 🔗 Read the full The Hechinger Report article below: #WorkBasedLearning #Apprenticeships #FutureOfWork #SkillsGaps #EarlyCareerTalent

"The college-to-career pipeline is broken, and the best way to fix it is to give students more latitude in choosing their own work-based learning experiences,” says Education at Work President Jane Swift in a recent University Business podcast. We must reform work-study programs to better prepare students for the workforce, and expand access to career-launching experiences while in college. At Education at Work, we know firsthand how meaningful, flexible work experiences in college can transform students’ futures.
