AI education policy, practice, and research with the SAFE framework - safety, accountability, fairness, and efficacy
About us
The EDSAFE AI Alliance aims to promote AI's safe, accountable, fair, and equitable (SAFE) use in education. Led by a Steering Committee of leading education, technology, and learning organizations, the Alliance joins forces to address one of our time's most pressing educational policy challenges. Anchored in the SAFE framework, EDSAFE focuses on policy development and support at the federal, state, and local level through our education and advocacy efforts. We support the field through a national network of district-level policy labs and a groundbreaking fellowship to build the field's capacity.

Fantastic work, Pat Yongpradit and Erin Mote!
We succeeded! The U.S. House of Representatives AI Task Force report has a chapter on AI in Education! You'd think this wouldn't be that big a deal, but early Senate forums on AI didn't include education as a topic and even the recent presidential election didn't have much in terms of education policy. There is also so much to cover per AI that legislators can view K-12 education as too removed from immediate concerns. I was fortunate to be asked to testify to the task force and am pleased with the results. See pages 87-110 for the education and workforce section. (Yeah, I never expected K-12 education to have its own chapter!) Key education-related messages: - Responsible AI adoption in America requires AI literacy. I added the responsible part. - K–12 educators need resources to promote AI literacy. - AI literacy includes understanding how AI works, using it responsibly, recognizing its social and ethical impacts, and understanding the benefits and how to mitigate the risks. - Schools and universities need guidance, such as in procuring AI tools wisely. - There is still not enough access and participation in STEM subjects, especially CS education, which contributes to AI literacy, and US students are lagging behind other nations in subjects like mathematics. Thank you, Representatives Jay Obernolte (R-CA) and Ted Lieu (D-CA) for leading the task force. Thank you to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Leader Hon. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) for their bipartisan efforts to improve our nation's AI standing. Thank you to all the players working to raise awareness of AI in education issues, such as Erin Mote, Karl Rectanus, and the members of the EDSAFE AI Alliance and Della Cronin, James Brown, and Bose Public Affairs Group. Thank you to my long-time colleague Allyson Knox of Microsoft. Thank you to Lane Dilg and Anna Makanju of OpenAI for making a place for education issues in much larger AI conversations. There are so many advocating for AI in education at the federal level, like Richard Culatta of ISTE, Julia Fallon of SETDA, Keith Krueger of Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), Sal Khan of Khan Academy, and Stacey Pelika of the National Education Association. Now if we can just pass some K-12 AI in education bills! #TeachAI, #AIliteracy

As we navigate the future of AI policy, it becomes evident that the guidelines and safeguards necessary for AI in K12 education differ from those required in other sectors. The distinct aspects of parental consent, privacy, and security, along with the current regulatory framework, indicate that self-regulation within the industry is likely going to be insufficient. The intricate policy landscape calls for effective checks and balances involving research and development, civil society, and policymakers. And different constituencies- from youth to parents are demanding it too. (This is only exacerbated by the aftermath of the effect of social media). There is a noticeable trend in the industry where efforts are being made to influence the work of developers led by and associated with major platforms and LLMs. However, the application of AI in education presents a unique set of challenges that require specific considerations - and brings forward the question of whether industry can regulate themselves. Your insights on this evolving landscape would be greatly appreciated as I think about these questions within EDSAFE AI Alliance and what role we can play to positively influence the direction of this work in a new Administration and Congress. #AI #Education #PolicyDiscussion

In the edtech industry, we hear a lot about engineering learning, scaling digital education, mining for data. In our learners' homes and pockets, though, there's a digital world that many have yet to access or fully participate in. In my latest piece for The Cutting Ed, I explore why building digital resilience might mean moving beyond traditional ideas of edtech—and how tools like Google Slides or ChatGPT can bridge the 'digital use divide.' I hope you'll read it and leave your comments! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eSJxvsjz 🙏🏻 Tagging some people here whose work is cited or reflected in this: Kristina Ishmael, Ji Soo Song, Erin Mote and other colleagues who contributed to the Office of EdTech's NETP and helped us name, define, and understand the "Digital Use Divide" ➡ U.S. Department of Education's Office of Career, Technical, and Adult Education staff who support the Digital Resilience in the American Workforce initiative 🌟 My innovative and amazing colleagues at World Education: Ebony Vandross and Cynthia Peters who amplify learners' voices through The Change Agent ➕ Jamie Harris Jen Vanek and Jeff Goumas who are THE digital resilience experts and creative geniuses!
In her new article on the Cutting Ed, Rachel Riggs from World Education discusses the American #digitaldivide and the steps it will take to bridge it. She emphasizes the need to shift from a digital literacy approach that centers on evaluating information, to one that is focused on building skills, confidence, and agility with tech and #AI.
