AI to advance our understanding of animal communication.
About us
Earth Species Project (ESP) is a non-profit research lab and impact organization focused on using artificial intelligence to advance our understanding of animal communication, and ultimately to decode non-human languages. We believe AI has the potential to transform the way we perceive the world around us, expanding the ability of human beings to learn from other species. Our hope is that this will make a significant contribution to altering human perspective on how we relate to the rest of nature.

Our work was recently featured in Nature Portfolio, showcasing the unique approach we’re taking to decoding animal communication. We’re building generalizable foundation models—large-scale AI systems trained not just on animal communication data but also on human speech, music, and other environmental sounds. These models are designed to uncover patterns in data across species, enabling us to identify meaningful communication even in unlabelled data. 🐦⬛ Our collaboration with University of León on carrion crow vocalizations exemplifies how these tools can reveal insights into complex animal repertoires. ESP is proud to have signed this new Declaration on Animal Dignity on Animal Rights Day. If we want to address the biodiversity and climate crises we are going to have to think differently about our relationship with nature, and rethinking how we treat our fellow species will be at the heart of that shift.
It's Animal Rights Day 2024. Today sees the launch of a historic Declaration on Animal Dignity and the associated Pledge for Animals, which I’ve been working on with with my brilliant colleagues Becca Franks and Eva Bernet Kempers. The Declaration has been signed by over 300 leading scholars, writers, and thinkers in associated fields in over 30 countries, and the Pledge is supported by a group of significant animal welfare organizations, including RSPCA, Compassion in World Farming, OneKind, and Mercy For Animals. The Pledge is a short symbolic promise for individuals and businesses with three actionable steps to treat other species with dignity by considering the language we use, for example, or the actions we take to reduce objectifying other species. Please consider supporting the campaign by sharing the short film, celebrating the declaration, or taking the pledge at www.animaldignity.info. #pledgeforanimals

How can artificial intelligence help us listen to nature? At the Dubai Future Forum next week, our Director of Impact Jane Lawton will join global thought leaders for a panel discussion on the ways AI is transforming our ability to connect with the natural world. Joining Jane are: 🌿 Koert van Mensvoort, Founder & CEO, Next Nature 🤖 Abdelrahman AlMahmoud, UAE Office on AI 🎙️ Moderated by Ariel Muller Ariel Muller, Global Director of Futures, Forum for the Future Together, they’ll unpack the exciting possibilities of technology as a bridge between humanity and the ecosystems we depend on.

We are excited to introduce NatureLM-audio, the first large audio-language model designed specifically for animal sounds. Check out the preprint in arXiv here: https://lnkd.in/g-hm-mxb And our demo: https://lnkd.in/gVazhfqa Built from millions of recordings in bioacoustic archives and enriched with speech and music data, NatureLM-audio begins to addresses some of the greatest challenges in bioacoustics by making it easier to understand the complex vocalizations of animals across the tree of life—from birds to marine mammals. 🌱 Zero-shot classification and detection: NatureLM-audio can classify animal sounds across thousands of species without additional training, delivering “out-of-the-box” results that enable broader and faster animal communication research and biodiversity assessments. 🔍 Generalizing to unseen species: It can identify species it's never encountered before based on genus patterns in scientific names—addressing critical data scarcity issues in bioacoustics. 🧠 Natural Language Prompts: NatureLM-audio works with audio and natural text prompts and generates natural language responses. 🪲 NatureLM is generalizable beyond standard tasks: - Predicting life stages of birds (e.g., chicks vs. juveniles) - Classifying call types (calls, songs) across species - Captioning bioacoustic audio to provide rich, descriptive details on animal sounds This is just the beginning but we're excited about these early results and what they mean for the study of bioacoustics and animal communication. We'll be releasing the code and an intuitive UI soon, as well as working on incorporating new forms of data (video, motion, etc.). Big congrats to our research team and especially authors Masato Hagiwara Marius Miron David Robinson and Olivier Pietquin!
