Books are great, but they could be screwing you over.
I call it 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲.
This occurs when your bookshelf grows, but your actions stay the same.
You’ve read the advice, highlighted the quotes, even nodded along in agreement...but nothing changes.
The issue is that learning without deliberate action keeps you stuck.
(I guess technically, it's not the books screwing you over.)
We get these awesome dopamine hits when reading because it feels productive.
Every page turn is another hit.
The problem is that we become addicted to the act of reading the books, not turning them into business value.
I'm not the first to notice this, but recently, I realized how much I used to do that.
At some point, this lesson clicked, and I'd cured myself.
I'm currently reading The Experience Economy.
It took me two weeks to get through the intro because I'd read a paragraph and think of multiple things I could do with my business.
I'd spend the rest of my leisure time note-taking, and the next morning, I'd action everything on my list.
I'm still not finished with the book, but I've applied at least ten things to my business that people have noticed and praised.
One action even locked in a client.
Had I waited to finish reading, I probably wouldn't have had these results.
I'd be overwhelmed with the list or excited to get into the next book.
I see this happen with agency owners I chat with A LOT.
They thank me for a book recommendation (which I made because I know it'll help the EXACT problem they're working through) only they fail to take action.
Reading the book checked a box in their head, but their business stayed the same.
So, my challenge for you:
Pick up the book you're currently reading and choose one action you could RIGHT NOW to test out what you're learning.
Go apply it.
Don't keep reading until you do.
Then move on.
Business books often get a bad reputation. And while I can't vouch for all books, I think a large issue is how we're reading and applying that information.
Even if a book only gives you one worthwhile tip, $20 for a lesson that could help your agency is probably worth it.
Don't let 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 hold you back in 2025.
What books do you recommend everyone should read?
