Our aim with Distinct Origins and Manam Chocolate is to represent the farm-to-chocolate movement. While this has much to do with the freedom it allows us to remodel and recalibrate the conventional processes, a deeper look at the history of Indian cacao will explain the root cause of wanting to reinvent the wheel. Or we must say, it became a necessity. That is how our affair with Mr. G.V Prasad, the very first farmer we started harvesting with, began. Additionally, using craft, we want to mould chocolate in every form it can exist and not limit it to just bars. This even reflects in the way the chocolate experience at Manam Karkhana has been conceived. For those who are yet to try craft chocolate, let me tell you craft chocolate is an order of magnitude different from the premium run-of-the-mill chocolate we grew up eating, even though it may all look the same. Thanks to Ajita Shashidhar and Fortune India for wonderfully highlighting the 'how' and covering our story.
Our cacao farm workers begin their day with a smile as they make their way to pick the juiciest cacao pods, right at the peak of flavour. West Godavari - A new origin for the world to discover Our journey begins in the fertile West Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh, India. Blessed by the River Godavari, cacao thrives here despite the challenging high temperatures. The cacao is farmed amidst lush tropical flora such as banana, areca nut and long pepper, which lend unique flavour nuances to our cacao. Although it is the largest cacao-growing region in the country, it is relatively unknown as a fine-flavoured cacao origin owing to its industrial focus.
