I recently interviewed Dropbox CEO Drew Houston about his thoughts on developer productivity and DX. As a developer turned CEO, Drew has a remarkable interest in this topic and a strong grasp of its nuances. Many engineering leaders struggle to align on developer productivity with their CEOs. We need more CEOs like Drew that are educated on the topic. Check out Drew’s thoughts and a glimpse into the work we are doing at Dropbox:

Whenever I’ve been asked “how should we measure productivity?” my answer has been, “it depends.” That’s changing today. Since publishing the DevEx framework last year, we’ve been constantly asked about the differences between DORA, SPACE, and DevEx, and what to measure. While each of these existing frameworks provides an important piece of the puzzle, none individually provides a holistic and prescriptive approach for getting started. For these reasons, we developed the DX Core 4 — a prescriptive framework for measuring productivity that encapsulates DORA, SPACE, and DevEx. The DX Core 4 provides a balanced way to measure productivity that’s both easy to deploy and relevant to leaders across the business, from the boardroom down to frontline teams. We developed the DX Core 4 over several months, led by myself and Laura Tacho with input from the creators of DORA and SPACE as well as numerous experts and DX customers. “Developer productivity is important to me as CEO because our company’s single biggest investment is in engineering… "I think every CEO who has engineers on payroll should similarly care about that investment.” Listen to Dropbox CEO Drew Houston and Developer Productivity leader Sheila Wakida describe their developer productivity journey and their experience with DX:

At DX, we recommend using a three-pronged approach to measuring the productivity impact of GenAI tools like Copilot. Here’s how that works: 1. Real-time surveys: This means delivering surveys at key moments (like PR merges) to capture how GenAI tools are being used. 2. Telemetry metrics: Use system-based metrics like deployment frequency and PRs merged. Compare GenAI users to non-users to see if users are seeing a lift. 3. Quarterly surveys: Capture a complete picture of the developer experience, including measures of effectiveness, quality, and impact. Compare the developer experience of GenAI users to non-users. Read more about this approach and how you can use DX to implement it: https://lnkd.in/eVdeaxWn
