Detroit Promise: Tuition-free path to associate's, bachelor's, or technical certificate at 32 partnering MI colleges.
About us
The Detroit Promise is a last-dollar scholarship that ensures all eligible Detroit residents have a tuition-free path to an associate degree, bachelor’s degree or technical certificate at participating academic institutions. Interested students should check with their school to ensure that their desired degree or technical certificate is Pell-eligible. Programs that are not Pell-eligible cannot be covered by the Detroit Promise. Detroit Promise funding is not competitive; every student who registers and meets the requirements will receive funding if their college determines they have an eligible funding gap. As a last-dollar scholarship, any Pell or TIP funding will always be applied to a student’s bill first. The Detroit Promise serves to cover any eligible funding gap. At community college schools, the Detroit Promise will be billed for any remaining balance up to the full cost of tuition and mandatory fees*. At university schools, any balance will be covered using gift aid as arranged by the participating institution and a contribution from the Michigan Education Excellence Foundation (MEEF).

We are excited to welcome Bottom Line to the city of Detroit! Crain's Detroit Business recently connected with one of our Senior Director's, Wytrice Harris, M.Ed., to discuss Detroit's continuous investment in college success. Bottom Line is an organization that addresses low college graduation rates of first-generation students from low-income backgrounds. Wytrice shared how this organization aligns with and strengthens the efforts of the Detroit Promise Scholarship and its impact on Detroit scholars. She said: “This funding is an important measure to ensure the Promise and other Detroit-based educational support programs can sustainably continue serving local students. It benefits not only the individuals but the economic strength of the Detroit region.” Wytrice highlighted how the Detroit Promise and programs like the Bottom Line, share a similar goal of getting Detroit students to and through college. DTE Day was a huge success! This past week, Detroit Promise scholars had the chance to network with hiring DTE Energy professionals and learn about available internship and co-op positions. Students met with individuals who work in computer science, engineering, STEM, accounting, finance, and more. The Detroit Promise team aims to connect Michigan businesses with our students so that they have the opportunity to build their professional networks, grow their skillsets, and begin their journey to a career. Networking is such a great way to meet and connect with other Detroiters! Last week, the Detroit Promise team hosted an Alumni Mixer at Detroit Shipping Co. for our former Promise scholars to connect and catch up with one another. We enjoyed drinks and food with some dancing to end the night! We can’t wait to see our alumni together again soon.
