About us
Born and bred in the Bay Area, DES shares the trailblazing spirit of Silicon Valley. As an integrated design firm, we collaborate between disciplines, from architecture and interior design to planning and engineering. We are here to cross boundaries. The clients we attract span technology, education, life science, healthcare, and real estate development. We cross-pollinate insights, designing solutions special to each project and informed by the full breadth of our experience. Research centers can inspire startup facilities. Social spaces can shape wellness clinics. Tech campuses can transform the urban places of tomorrow. It all starts with the partnership, a give-and-take of ideas. Bring us your site, budget, and brief. Bring on the unexpected, the unexplored, the uncertain. Where others see limitations, we see possibilities. We believe a process that’s agile and flexible produces a place that is the same. A place that’s designed for working and playing, healing and learning, dreaming and doing. A place that inspires people to make it their own.

Exciting news! 🏆 theLAB Emeryville received an Award of Merit at the AIA San Mateo County 2024 Design Awards! Originally built in 1919 for the Sherwin-Williams Company, this building operated until the mid-2000s as a paint factory. Re-envisioned as a Class-A lab and office space, theLAB Emeryville adaptively reuses the 72,000-sf, three-story brick building, giving a new sense of presence and purpose to a neighborhood anchor. The jury noted the strategic reuse of the existing structure and praised the new passthrough, saying "The renovation kept the best of the existing building, without excessive modification. The bike and pedestrian passage is a generous and bold move for the public, as well as for the building." Last week, we celebrated our very own Mikaela Leo, AIA, NCARB, WELL AP Leo at the AIA San Mateo County Design Awards. An accomplished architect who is passionate about education, community impact, and fostering collaborative, sustainable environments, Mikaela was honored with the chapter's coveted Emerging Professional Award! Dedicated to project success from every angle, she actively contributes to both project outcomes and financial goals. Mikaela’s proactive approach, anticipating challenges and developing solutions before they arise, underscores her forward-thinking mindset. Her flexibility in working across all our market sectors and willingness to adapt further showcase her can-do attitude. Beyond her professional contributions, Mikaela has been an active participant in the DES firm culture. She has contributed to redefining the company’s core values, fostering a more inclusive and collaborative work environment. Mikaela has also organized and participated in various social events, including potluck lunches, fashion shows, and networking events. She is a member of the company’s gardening club, promoting sustainability and wellness within the office. Juror comments described Mikaela as "thoughtful and energetic, clearly the future of the profession," and we couldn't agree more ✨ #AIA #designawards #emergingprofessional #professionaldevelopment

Giving new life to an existing warehouse, 4055 Bohannon combines functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal within a Class-A life science facility. The adaptive reuse project has undergone a staggering transformation from industrial warehouse to a collaborative hub, featuring a striking new exterior clad with custom metal and concrete panels, offering a modern yet sophisticated presence in the Greater Stanford Life Science Cluster. Fostering an environment that encourages innovation and collaboration, expansive windows and skylights maximize daylight, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere for tenants. The interior blends hospitality-inspired breakout areas with fully built-out laboratories, offering highly functional yet comfortable spaces tailored to life science professionals. With nearly 40,000 square feet that can be subdivided, built-in flexibility ensures that the project can meet evolving needs of both large and small tenants. #adaptivereuse #flexiblelabs #lifescience

Happy Thanksgiving from DES! We started the celebration early with potlucks in both our Redwood City and San Francisco offices. In the spirit of giving back, members of our team also volunteered their time at the annual Redwood City Boys and Girls Club Thanksgiving Dinner, a DES tradition. Wishing you a peaceful holiday weekend full of food, fun, and family!

Last week, DES' own Dawn Jedkins was honored as one of Bisnow Northern California's Women Leading Real Estate alongside incredible women across the spectrum of our industry. Specifically, Dawn participated in a panel on Mentorship & Career Advancement, sharing her story of moving from the UK to the United States right out of college, and the power of taking risks on the right people (thank you for that job offer, Tom Gilman, AIA, LEED AP!). The night was filled with empowering stories and words of encouragement—a true celebration of resilience, strength, and support. The DES crew was proud to cheer on Dawn and long-time client Maria McGuigan of Jay Paul Company on their achievements and impact on commercial real estate. #womeninarchitecture #womeninconstruction #womenindevelopment #realestatedevelopment #mentorship #womenwholead
